Lately, I have been hearing the word "freedom" being used a lot. I might say being bandied about. As a teacher and student of Mindfulness Meditation, freedom is an interesting concept, much different than how it seems to be being used these days. I keep hearing that it means being able to do what I want without judgment, in spite of societal norms, without consequence or interference from others or the government. It is the line in the sand.

Let me quote from Reflections on Silver River by Ken McLeod.

“If we can experience the joys, tribulations and pain of life without being carried away by them and without suppressing them, then we are free, or as free as possible within the human condition. What is this freedom? Most people think freedom as freedom to act as they wish or as freedom from unpleasantness, obligation or responsibility. These are infantile notions of freedom that are based on the desire to control what we experience. The illusion of control is itself an indication of a lack of freedom. As long as we are human, we are never free to do whatever we want. Nor will we ever be free from pain and unpleasantness. The awakened person's freedom is not about "freedom to" or "freedom from". It is not about understanding life and being able to control it. It is a freedom that comes when we accept that life is just life. Only then can we be truly responsive to the pain and struggles of others.” And only then can we be free. (my words)

I am unsure of where this notion of behavior without consequence came from but I can see from my many years living in Yankee territory that the ‘live free or die’ license plate and ‘the pull yourself up by your bootstraps’ attitude has come to roost and be well fed in the minds of many. This is probably easier than caring about others or being concerned and sensitive to how my actions might impact someone else. And who is standing in front of me on the other side of the line?

I am a reader. There are very few books that have changed me. Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson is one of them. It has deeply broadened by thinking and challenged some unconscious biases that I have held. It is timely while revealing a history that I was never taught. I invite you, family and friends to join Kristi Walsh and myself to this seven session exploration and study of Caste. We will meet every other week beginning on February 4th at 5:30PM PST for an hour and a half. We have added an additional session beginning on Sunday, February 7th at 10:30AM PST. It will meet every other week also for an hour an a half. Once you advise either Kristi or I that you will attend these Zoom meetings we will send you a session outline and throughout the duration we will send you some questions prior to each session to study. Beginning on Sunday, October 4th at 10AM, I will be offering my second Mindfulness Meditation Series. There will be 4 classes. This series is all about supporting our mindfulness practice and utilizing our practice of loving awareness for our own healing and empowerment. During these stressful and despairing times we need to "get to the cushion" which will help us remember and connect to the good, to the compassionate and to our truth.
The 4 four classes are:
Oct 4: Getting to the Cushion & Supporting Your Practice
Oct 11: Building Tolerance during these difficult & stressful times
Oct 18: Cultivating Self-Forgiveness
Oct 25: Finding Your Inner Compass
These months and yes, years have been increasingly difficult. And the landscape becomes more terrifying each day it seems. How do we hold our own and stay grounded and speak our voice and truth.
Mindfulness Meditation is a powerful resource and tool to do just that - stay grounded and connected to the good, the compassionate, the truth. I hope that you will join me for these 4 Sunday's in October. Each class will include a talk on the topic and a guided and silent meditation and some time for questions or comments.

These classes will be through Zoom. They will be an hour and 15 minutes. I will be posting a link prior to each Sunday’s class. If you would like to be included please send me your email. Also you may join directly from the link I will provide in FB posts each week. These classes are being offered as donation based (min donation of $15). During the class I will provide a link to Venmo for your donation.

Announcing the continuation of the series Mindfulness Meditation in the time of the Pandemic. On Sunday, the 12th at 10am PDT I will be presenting on Mindfulness of Emotions, the second Mindfulness foundation with a special talk on RAIN. RAIN is a tool for managing our difficult and challenging emotions during these challenging times. It’s a practice that allows us to become less reactive and hold all of our feelings with loving awareness.

The class will be for an hour and 15 minutes, a bit longer than previous classes to allow for the talk, a meditation on Mindfulness of Emotions and an exploration of RAIN.

There is no need to preregister for this class, just click on the link or call in. Looking forward to this Sunday.

This Sunday at 10AM PDT, I will be offering a Mindfulness Meditation Class on Mindfulness of the Body. This is the second class in my series Mindfulness Meditation in the time of the Pandemic. I invite you to join for this hour of meditation focused on the body and a brief talk.

Thanks for liking my page. Wanted to let you all know that I am offering a Mindfulness Meditation series on Zoom. There will be four one-hour classes: "MIndfulness Meditation in the Time of the Pandemic". The classes will explore mindfulness of our breath, our body, our emotions and our thoughts and how we can use mindfulness to be resilient in this chaotic time. The classes begin on June 21st, Sunday at 10am PDT. The schedule is June 21st, June 28th, July 12th, & July 19th.
