This quote comes from my 'Read Without Glasses at Any Age' book, and applies equally to myopia/nearsightedness as to hyperopia/presbyopia/farsightedness and astigmatism.
"Two levels of strain
When vision first becomes blurry it is a sign that some eye muscles are under strain. The typical initial reaction to this blur is to make some effort to see better. This effort produces a second layer of strain, usually in the eyelids and facial muscles. Squinting soon becomes a habit. Squinting may bring back some clarity, yet the added strain of squinting, and therefore the clarity, is not sustainable.
When you begin to release strain, the first level of relaxation dissolves this outer layer of strain created by squinting. Unfortunately, the result can be a temporary increase of blur. Not everyone experiences a temporary increase in blurry vision, but some students get discouraged by it and abandon the method before it has a chance to produce real results. If this happens to you, don’t give up! You have to accept that you need to let go of the ‘false clarity’ obtained by squinting. Real and sustainable clarity comes only when you let go of the deeper original strain. You need to reach that deeper level of relaxation."
(Triggered by a question on another vision improvement FB page, and I thought it was worth posting here too.) Keep relaxing! 😍
