This interesting article points up the benefits of slow paced breathing. It includes a brief discussion of heart rate variability which Stephen Porges states in his text on Polyvagal Theory is a measure of vagal tone. Vagal tone indicates ability to regulate affect. Affect regulation is a major part of a good subjective life experience.

One of my clients receives feedback on large screens during brain training. Biomarkers are simultaneously monitored indicating somatic components of arousal or relaxation. Almost 100% have a deeply relaxing experience which, when learned, can be invoked to counter anxiety. One of the advantages of this is that the source of the trigger does not even need to be identified in order to be neutered. Sometimes triggers are shrouded in convoluted events of long ago.
