Today is Human Trafficking Awareness Day 💙Human trafficking happens in every state, including Oklahoma, and often increases during and after disasters. When communities are disrupted, people may be displaced, separated from support systems, or seeking help, and these conditions are what just what traffickers are looking to exploit. At OKMRC, we believe preparedness includes understanding these risks, knowing the warning signs, and supporting trauma-informed, survivor-centered response. Awareness helps reduce vulnerability and keeps communities safer before, during, and after disasters.

If you or someone you know needs help, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline: 1-888-373-7888 or text 233733 (BEFREE).

This weekend, check those emergency kits, and make any updates needed and restock. Don't forget to check and update your vehicle emergency kit as well. If you want to learn more about preparedness, check out our OKMRC Events Calendar as we already have numerous trainings and events schedule this year and are adding more each week! Stay safe!

Who had severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings on their bingo card for January? Not us, that's for sure! But it is a great reminder that any kind of weather can happen at any time. We are in Oklahoma, after all.

Now, between weather events, is a great time to review your emergency kit and make sure it's fully stocked and in a convenient place to grab at a moments notice.

Here are some of the basics you should have in your kit:
‣ Water (one gallon per person per day for several days, for drinking and sanitation)
‣ Food (at least a several-day supply of non-perishable food)
‣ Manual can opener (for food)
‣ Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
‣ Flashlight
‣ First aid kit
‣ Extra batteries
‣ Whistle (to signal for help)
‣ Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
‣ Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
‣ Local maps
‣ Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
‣ Medication
‣ Pet food
‣ Personal hygiene supplies

A more extensive list can be found at www.ready.gov/kit

Hi OKMRC! Looks like there are still some slots open in this weekend's Emergency Animal Sheltering Level 1 class. Sign up links can be found on the OKMRC Events Calendar for January (www.OKMRC.org). The description says the class closed on 1/4, but you actually can still enroll, but most likely won't get your book shipped to you in time for the class Friday evening. However, they will send you an electronic version and you can either use it electronically or print yourself out a hard copy. This class is a pre-requisite for the Level 2 class in February. It's a virtual 2 day course. Friday, 1/9, is 5-9 pm and Saturday, 1/10, is from 9 am - 1pm. It's great information if you plan on helping our animal response teams during disasters (and great tips for your furry family members).

***Preparedness Tip: While you’re snuggled up with your pet, snap a quick selfie together. Print it out and add it to your go-bag. We promise, having a photo of you and your pet can help with reunification if you’re separated after a disaster .

💻📱 Happy Technology Day!

Technology keeps us connected… until the battery dies. 🔋

***Preparedness tip: Turn on emergency alerts AND keep a portable charger in your go-kit - because 1% is NOT a preparedness plan. Bonus points if it has a solar option for those disasters that leave you without electricity for days!
