This study is interesting. Instead of focusing on the estimated fetal weight during a third trimester ultrasound, it suggests we should be paying special attention to specifically the abdominal circumference (AC) of the baby.

We’ve observed an increase in dating ultrasounds being done between 11 and 13 weeks instead of the past timeframe before 10 weeks. If this protocol becomes standard practice, a detailed first trimester ultrasound versus standard dating Ultrasound or NT Ultrasound could help detect more fetal anomalies.

Dawn is currently at the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine 2026 conference. (SMFM 2026) Here is an interesting study being presented at the conference.  Currently routine, low-risk maternal care typically only includes a first trimester dating Ultrasound and mid pregnancy anatomy ultrasound. This study shows one and six patients receiving an additional third trimester growth ultrasound have significant findings that otherwise would never have been detected.
If your current provider does not include a third trimester growth ultrasound, you can request one.
