My Favorite Tricks for Menstrual Cramps (That Actually Work šŸ™Œ)

Let’s talk about those fun little uterine contractions we all know and don’t love: menstrual cramps. Over the years (and many cycles later), I’ve found a few go-to tricks that truly help — and no, you don’t have to just ā€œtough it out.ā€

Here’s what I swear by:

šŸ’Š Start NSAIDs before the cramps start.
This is a game-changer. Meds like ibuprofen or naproxen work best if you start them 1–2 days before your period begins — especially if you tend to be regular. They block prostaglandins (those pesky chemicals that cause cramping), and can reduce both the pain and the flow. Don’t wait until you’re curled up in a ball!

šŸ”„ Heat is your bestie.
Heating pads, warm baths, those stick-on heat patches — they all help relax the muscles of the uterus and ease pain.

šŸ§˜ā€ā™€ļø Movement, not just rest.
Light exercise (like walking or yoga) increases blood flow and releases endorphins. I know it’s the last thing you feel like doing, but it really can help.

ā˜• Watch the caffeine.
Too much coffee can make cramps worse for some people. If you’re super sensitive, try herbal tea (ginger and peppermint are faves).

🌿 Magnesium + Omega-3s.
There’s some evidence that magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce cramps and inflammation. Worth adding to your routine if cramps are a monthly struggle.

You don’t have to suffer. If your cramps are severe or interfering with your life, talk to your doc — there are more options (like birth control, or treating underlying causes like endometriosis).

🌈 Pride is about more than identity—it’s about safety, dignity, and belonging. 🌈

At InBloom Care for Women, we stand with our LGBTQ+ community and with all people who feel unseen, unheard, or unsafe—especially in times like these, when fear and need for belonging is so real for so many.

No matter your identity, your background, or your status—you are welcome here. My practice is, and always will be, a safe space. You deserve compassionate, evidence-based care without judgment or fear.

This Pride Month—and every month—we honor diversity, we embrace community, and we fight for a world where everyone feels like they belong.

šŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆšŸ³ļøā€āš§ļøšŸ’– Whether you’re here for birth control, hormone care, pregnancy, or just want to talk about your health without judgment—I see you, I respect you, and I’ve got you.

I love helping teens navigate contraception, period concerns, and all the changes that come with growing up. One of the biggest fears I hear? That seeing a gynecologist means having a pelvic exam. But truthfully—that’s not the case for most teen visits.

These first steps into managing your own healthcare should feel empowering, not scary. My goal is always to support teens in making informed decisions about their bodies, at their own pace, and with their voice at the center of the conversation.

If you have a teen, I’d be honored to help take care of them. šŸ’•

ā˜€ļøIt’s that time of year again!… For the entirety of the summer, our office will be closed on Fridays to allow our staff to spend precious summer time with our children (they are some pretty cool kids and growing too fast).
We will continue to be available for emergency questions if needed. Any non-emergent concerns will be addressed during open business hours. As always, you may always text the office, leave a voicemail, or message through the patient portal.
Please be understanding as we make this temporary transition. We will be back to normal hours when school starts back in the fall.

Menstrual Cycle, as Told by Your Inner Drama Queen:

Day 1–5 (Menstrual Phase):
She’s bleeding. She’s tired. She just cried because a banana bruised.
Cancel everything.

Day 6–14 (Follicular Phase):
Suddenly… she’s THAT girl. Clear skin, high energy, productivity queen.
Buys a planner. Works out once. Declares herself reborn.

Day 14 (Ovulation):
Hormones are peaking. She’s glowing. Everyone’s hot.
Do NOT text your ex. I repeat: DO NOT.

Day 15–28 (Luteal Phase):
Bloating. Mood swings. Chocolate cravings. Feels personally victimized by her jeans.
Considers burning it all down—settles for a nap.

Moral of the story?
You’re not ā€œtoo muchā€ā€”you’re just hormonal. And that’s science, baby.

As we wrap up Nurses Week, I just want to take a moment to thank all the incredible labor and delivery, postpartum, and surgical nurses I get to work with every day.

We truly couldn’t do it without you. Whether you’re helping in the delivery room, supporting our new parents through postpartum, or assisting in surgery, your expertise and care are essential to giving our patients the best experience possible. It’s a team effort, and your compassion, skill, and teamwork make all the difference.

Thank you for being such an amazing part of the team. Your hard work and dedication never go unnoticed, and I’m grateful for everything you do, day in and day out.

With appreciation,
Dr. Julie Wiley, OB/GYN
