This Grandparent's Day is very special for us. Not only has our father organized ALL his important documents and wishes in his Age With Intention binder, he also recently completed the second step with the help of the book For You When I am Gone by Steve Leder (that we include with every binder).

As Rabbi Leder explains in the book, by a certain age, most of us have some sort of estate plan and a will to determine who inherits our material possessions and our money, if we are lucky enough to have extra when we die. Once that plan is completed and the will is signed, many people feel they have checked a box and done right by their heirs. We often forget about the other, more important treasures we have to give - our values, hopes, advice, deep love and the accrued wisdom of a lifetime for those who will live on when we are gone.

Our dad answered every single question in the book and presented it to us at a beautiful lunch. This is a gift like no other! His intentionality has led us down this path and we hope to share it with others.

Happy Grandparents Day to the best one out there (Papa Hank) and thank you to Steve Leder for writing the most beautiful book.

There is new legislation that has been introduced in the US House of Representatives that would make fall prevention screening (including those conducted by PTs) a regular part of the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit and the "welcome" visit. Called the SAFE Act (Stopping Addiction and Falls for the Elderly Act), it is designed to reduce the risk of falls and opioid use that can occur after a fall. While there are stipulations that include sustaining a fall in the year prior, it appears to be a GREAT step forward towards improving access to therapy services for fall prevention. But why wait? We can screen now and help identify at-risk areas to help reduce the risk for even 1 fall to occur! 1 fall is 1 too many. Let us help!

Today is World Parkinson's Day. Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurologic disease that affects motor systems (tremors, slowness of movement, rigidity, and balance/gait issues such as shuffling) and non-motor systems (sleep, constipation, sensory changes, and cognition). It also affects speech, swallowing, and facial expressions. It is diagnosed based on symptoms and treated with medications and exercise. Parkinson's disease also directly affects the caregivers and family members who love and care for someone with this diagnosis, as it increases the care need and burden as the disease progresses. Home set-up and safety are imperative to reduce fall risk and improve the ability to maneuver in one's environment. Please reach out if we can assist you or a loved one!

Assist bars don't look like they used to! This is a toilet tissue holder that doubles as a support aid (up to 300 lbs). The bathroom is where people want to maintain their independence for as long as possible. This is an example of small changes NOW that can prepare you for upcoming surgeries or decreased mobility in the future. Reach out if you would like a home evaluation for you or a loved one.

Sometimes people are slow to change. I know I am. Even though we may know that something needs to be done to make things safer, it takes the receiving party a little bit more time to agree and come to terms with that suggestion. I try not to say this MUST or NEEDS to be done. Instead, I often have better luck with a "what do you think?" approach. Are there any other methods that work for you?

After 25 years, this one still BLOWS MY MIND. I bet only 1/10 people that I recommend remove, secure or replace a rug will actually do it. I have heard every excuse under the sun. Some make me laugh ("it covers that spot on the floor")...others are just plain sad ("my husband [with Parkinson's] needs to learn to walk over it"). If you or someone you love has a visual impairment, a sensory deficit, a neurologic disease or flexibility issues in your ankle, rugs can be a big hazard (just to name a few). Choose a low-profile rug, secure with rug tape or protective backing, or just REMOVE it. It really is that simple to improve safety. Love your people and yourself more than a floor covering.
