This morning my husband and I were chatting in the kitchen when one of my 3 year olds came into the space quiet as a mouse and started snapping pictures of us while perched under the kitchen table.

We discovered her after her giggling got loud enough to expose her position at which point she stood up and cheekily announced that she had taken our photo.

It was very cute and led to a goofy chase around the house. But later when I was looking through her shots I was reminded of something far more serious.

Our children are watching us. They are always absorbing the rhythms of our lives. The way we relate to our partners and friends and their siblings and even to ourselves.

Here are my wishes when it comes to the scenes they will see in my home…

I want my children to see me loving others generously.

I want me children to see me being loved generously by others.

I also want them to see me feeling frustrated and sorrowful and even scared, but to see me honoring those emotional states while using coping skills to keep them in a safe zone.

I want them to see me being compassionate not only to them but to my husband and to myself.

I want them to see me taking responsibility and working hard, but also enjoying life and taking rest.

I want them to see me modeling all the things I’m trying to teach them to do and also being gentle with myself when I’m not able to and flub every so often.

I want them to look up from their position a few feet below me and feel comfort knowing that their mother is a truly imperfect person (so they feel permission to be too) but also someone with enough love and emotional security that they feel comforted when they watch me move through the world.

We certainly can’t give them perfection, but we can give them the gift of a template for what safe, loving, connected relationships look like.
