On June 12, 2025, Dr. Michael Feldman joined an expert panel at the Cherokee Nation Rare Disease Summit in Tahlequah, held at the Cherokee Nation Outpatient Health Center. As part of this second annual event, Dr. Feldman led a breakout session on pediatric neurovascular disease, sharing insights on diagnosis and treatment.

The summit—organized by Cherokee Nation Health Services —addressed the unique challenges faced by tribal citizens living with rare conditions. Speakers included specialists in neurology, rheumatology, pulmonary, and pediatric care, alongside patient advocates and tribal leadership. 👥

Rare diseases affect approximately 1 in 10 Oklahomans, and over 90% lack FDA-approved treatments. Events like this help raise awareness, build support networks, and improve care across Indian Country.

We salute Dr. Feldman and all who are working to bring hope and solutions to patients with rare and often overlooked conditions.

The cerebellum is often called the “little brain." 🧠

Known primarily for coordinating movement, balance, and posture, it also plays a role in cognitive functions like attention, language, and emotional regulation.

This vital brain region integrates sensory input and motor control to ensure smooth, efficient functioning.

Protecting the cerebellum is essential, as damage can lead to coordination issues, speech difficulties, and cognitive challenges.

At OU Neurosurgery, we focus on advancing research and treatment to support brain health, including this powerful yet often overlooked part of the brain.

Ever wondered what’s really going on when you get a ? 🥶🍦

The technical name is sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia, and it happens when something cold (like ice cream) hits the roof of your mouth too quickly.

This rapid drop in temperature causes nearby blood vessels to constrict and then quickly dilate, triggering pain signals through the trigeminal nerve.

The result? A sudden, sharp headache your mistakenly locates in your forehead.

Brain freeze usually lasts less than 30 seconds, but it’s surprisingly common—affecting up to 74% of adults, according to the British Medical Journal.

The fix: eat cold foods slowly, and if it happens, gently press your tongue to the roof of your mouth to warm the area.

Let's congratulate Dr. Michael Feldman for helping lead the charge to pass the HB384 in Alabama, a groundbreaking bill that will require folic acid fortification in corn masa products, like tortillas and corn flour, beginning June 2026.

Why does this matter?

Populations that consume a corn-based diet are often under-reached by traditional folic acid fortification, leaving them at higher risk for neural tube defects like spina bifida. This bill helps close that gap!

As a neurosurgeon dedicated to treating spina bifida, Dr. Feldman knows the power of prevention. This public health win is a major step forward for maternal and fetal health across the state.

A huge thanks to the advocates, clinicians, and policymakers making this change possible! 👏
