✨ INSIDE OUT 2✨ I have seen this in the movie theatre TWICE already! Once with my girls and once with my play therapist colleagues! I love this movie because it aligns with my philosophy as a therapist! I utilize Attachment Theory and Internal Family Systems to process clients and their healing! Here are my favorite messages from the movie that also align with my beliefs as a clinician!
Core Belief System- We all have a core belief system. Our true authentic self, who we were created to be. Our life experiences shape our belief of how we feel about ourselves.
No Bad Feelings - This aligns with and Richard Schwartz book “No Bad Parts” (if you haven’t read I highly recommend). Fear and anxiety are often labeled as inherently “bad” emotions, the truth is they can protect us in specific situations. Similar to how Fear protects the rest of the characters with an emotional parachute, our own fears can help guide us through life.
Hold Space for Your Pain- Joy and grief can coexist. We are reminded in the movie that growing up is hard.
We have more on our plates, more responsibilities, and less free time, It’s important to remember that there is still joy in the chaos, joy in the grief, no matter what stage of life.
You Are Not Alone- The healing message of “you are not alone” is so powerful. Joy asks anxiety to take a seat, while Riley’s friend Grace checks on her during Riley’s panic attack. We are created to live life in connection with others. This connection allows Riley to regain her sense of self and overcome her anxiety.
Love & Acceptance- We are all created worthy of love. Often we are harder on ourselves than we need to be. Remember, we all replay those embarrassing moments like a movie reel in our minds, but those moments are also us overcoming and resilience.
