Knee effusion, sometimes called water on the knee, occurs when excess fluid accumulates in or around the knee joint. Common causes include arthritis and injury to the ligaments or meniscus, which is cartilage in the knee.

A small amount of fluid exists in normal joints. In some cases, however — for example, with rheumatoid arthritis — excess fluid can build up, and the knee becomes puffy and swollen. Statistics suggest that 27% of people will experience fluid on the knee at some time.

Most treatments for knee joint effusion depend on the underlying cause, and treatment will vary between individuals.

Treatment options include:
•Aspiration, or drainage
•Knee injections
•Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
•Antibiotics for infection
•A knee brace or splint for stability
•Rheumatoid arthritis meds
•Knee surgery or knee replacement: Surgery may be the best remedy in some cases.

If you’re dealing with persistent fluid in your knee, it’s time to have an exam with an orthopedic doctor. Call us today to schedule at 405-632-4468

HOW TO MANAGE ARTHRITIS PAIN
Many people who have arthritis or a related disease may be living with chronic pain. Pain is chronic when it lasts three to six months or longer, but arthritis pain can last a lifetime. It may be constant, or it may come and go.

1. Take Your Medications
Use the prescription and over-the-counter drugs recommended by your doctor to help control inflammation and pain. Follow the instructions provided by your doctor. When you are experiencing a painful flare-up, it's important to be proactive with your OTC medications.

2. Manage Your Weight
We know it's easier said than done. Excess weight can cause more pressure on the weight-bearing joints and increase pain. Plus, adipose tissue (aka: fat) sends out chemical signals that increase inflammation. Being overweight is bad for your overall health, as it increases your chances for heart disease, diabetes and even some cancers. In one study, authors found that overweight people with knee osteoarthritis enjoyed decreased disability after losing 5 percent of their weight - just nine pounds if you weigh 180 pounds - over a period of four months.

3. Stay Active
We know... it seems ironic that we want you to move MORE when you are in pain. In addition to helping control weight, activities like walking, water aerobics at your local gym, or yoga can help reduce joint pain and improve flexibility, balance and strength. Cardiovascular exercise, like biking on a stationary bike, also helps keep your heart in shape. If you are new to exercise, talk to your doctor to find out what may be best for you. With exercise, you will also feel more energetic and it can help you sleep better. Strengthening the muscles helps support the joints, and thereby reduces pain.

4. Keep a Positive Attitude
Many people with chronic arthritis pain find that a positive attitude can significantly boost their ability to cope with pain. Try not to give in to pain.

Reducing your arthritis pain is key to living a better life - mentally and physically.
