Chronic Anxiety: Why Does This Person Have This “Illness” at This Time? This is a 4.0 CEU seminar addressing the topic Chronic Anxiety from a Bowen Family Systems Theory (BFST) Perspective. This seminar is part of our Working Within the Family Series. This installment is designed to provide clinicians with an understanding about how chronic anxiety contributes to the development and maintenance of many of the physical, emotional, behavioral, and social symptoms we see in clinical practice. Chronic anxieties are often bound within relationship systems resulting in emotional conflict, a pattern of over/under functioning, the development of “symptoms” in one or more family members, and/or emotional cutoff. Clinicians will leave this workshop with better understandings about how chronic anxieties can manifest in individuals and relationships. A light continental breakfast will be provided. Register online at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/135045377359.

Lessons from Thanksgiving. It turns out sharing meals together is important even for intact families that are otherwise well-connected. In a 2004 study of thousands of students aged 11 to 18 years, Eisenberg, Olson, Neumark-Sztainer, Story, and Bearinger discovered that children in families that shared meals together were less likely to use ci******es, alcohol, or ma*****na. They were also less likely to suffer from depression. Girls were less likely to think about or attempt su***de. When compared to boys who never shared meals with their family, boys who shared 1-2 meals with their family each week were 10% less likely to use ma*****na and boys who shared more than 7 meals with their family each week were half as likely to use ma*****na. When compared to girls who never shared meals with their family, girls who shared 1-2 meals with their family each week were 10% less likely to suffer from depression or think about su***de and girls who shared more than 7 meals with their family each week were half as likely to suffer from depression or think about su***de. Enjoy dinner together!
