Music doesn’t have to fix everything—it just needs to meet you where you are. It can hold space for rest, reflection, or simply a deep breath.

"Music can help calm the mind—especially if the music is meaningful to you in some way. I use it when I’m having a long day and there’s still more work to be done. Music can come in between those moments of tension and provide a sort of balm."

This simple daily check-in can help you stay present, grounded, and more aware of what’s good—even on tough days. Gratitude doesn’t ignore struggle—it gives you something solid to stand on while you work through it.

"I have found, through my work with clients, that when we develop a daily gratitude practice, our outlook on life can start to shift. We become more hopeful, positive, grateful for the small moments of contentment in life." -Amy McClung, LADC/MH

This technique helps calm the body and build awareness of where stress or emotion shows up physically. It’s gentle, accessible, and a great reset when emotions feel overwhelming.

"Clients will think of a happy memory and notice their breathing. Then I have them place their hand over the spot they notice their breathing starts. I have them continue to take deep breaths with the hand over the spot. Part of my group of initial go-to coping skills with beginners to deep breathing." -German Gallardo, LPC-C

Nature doesn’t have to be complicated. Whether it’s stepping outside to breathe or admiring a sunrise, it can bring presence, peace, and perspective. It can be combined with other coping skills like going on a walk, drinking coffee, listening to music, meditation, or riding a bike, or used on its own! It’s also all around us, so it’s easily accessible!

"This practice helps us to remember we’re not alone in this world and can become a practice of connecting to the world around us. I know, for me, connecting with nature helps me experience peace, a sense of groundedness, and wonder."

Journaling creates space to slow down and reflect. Over time, it helps reveal patterns, tracks progress, and highlights moments of growth you might have otherwise missed. This practice is about learning to know yourself better and show up for yourself more fully.

"Every night, I write just 3–4 sentences about my day—what I did, how I felt, any mistakes I made, and what I want to do differently next time. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be honest." -Matt Matthews, LADC/MH
