A vacation to Cabo, Mexico took an unexpected turn when Terry Furrh, an active and lifelong athlete, passed out on a golf course without warning. Feeling healthy and symptom-free, heart disease was the last thing on his mind.

After returning home, a follow-up revealed a heart murmur, leading to a diagnosis of aortic valve stenosis, a serious heart valve condition that often shows no obvious signs.

Thanks to quick action and a dedicated care team at INTEGRIS Health Heart Hospital, Terry received a pacemaker and later underwent a successful heart valve replacement. He was discharged the very next day and is now back to enjoying life—with a new perspective.

“I’m fortunate and lucky to have been given a second chance,” Terry shared. “This experience showed me that even if you feel healthy, it’s important to listen to your body and follow up when something doesn’t seem right.”

Terry hopes his story encourages others to prioritize heart health, get regular checkups and never ignore the unexpected. ❤️

Two heart transplants were performed this weekend, making it a Valentine’s weekend we will never forget. Even in moments of deep heartbreak, families made the courageous choice to offer others a second chance at life.

Thank you to the physicians (highlighted below) who led these procedures and to the many caregivers who make this work possible.

Since 1985, we have remained Oklahoma’s only adult heart transplant program, providing the highest level of heart care for Oklahomans and beyond. ❤️

While eating at a local restaurant, one of our ICU nurses, Shelbie Powers, RN, noticed someone choking and immediately intervened. She quickly performed the Heimlich maneuver, clearing the airway.

Shelbie’s actions reflect the responsibility our nurses carry with them every day, both inside the hospital and in the community.

We are proud of Shelbie’s commitment to caring for others, on and off the clock. 💚

At 77 years young, Randy Sawyer is living proof that it’s never too late for a second chance at life! Randy received his lung transplant at age 76 and recently shared photos from his 77th birthday celebration.

After a 50-year career of teaching and coaching, he’s now enjoying hunting, golfing and creating art — all made possible by his transplant. His artwork was even featured in a Kansas art show.

We’re thankful for all the caregivers who made his second chance possible, including his pulmonologist, Mark Rolfe, M.D., and cardiothoracic surgeon, Daniel Freno, M.D.

Here’s to many more birthdays ahead, Randy! 🥳

At 72 years old, Nola Harrison received a double lung transplant and a new lease on life.

While she attended game 7 of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s championship victory in 2024, Nola’s lung condition had drastically deteriorated and she wondered whether she might be around to see the Thunder try to repeat their magical season this year.

After years of managing asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, pulmonary hypertension and worsening lung disease, Nola’s lungs had swollen and nearly doubled in size. Her condition worsened until she ended up hospitalized and put on a full flow of oxygen. At 72 years old, Nola thought there were limited options available to her.

“I didn’t think at my age that a transplant was an option, but I was ready to find a solution,” Nola says. “No one at INTEGRIS Health blinked an eye at my age. Instead, my pulmonologists and surgeons provided support and encouragement.”

Nola received a double lung transplant in August 2025. Her surgery and recovery have been a complete success. She’s breathing on her own with no complications and is back to walking one to two miles at least four days a week.

“I can finally breathe again thanks to the care team at INTEGRIS Health,” Nola says.
