Bikram Yoga is a series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises, designed by Bikram Choudhury, performed in a studio heated to 105 degrees with 50% humidity. This series systematically works every part of the body, to give all the internal organs, veins, ligaments and muscles everything they need to maintain optimum health and maximum function. Bikram Choudhury is the founder of the worldwide Yoga College of India™. Born in Calcutta in 1946, Bikram began Yoga at the age of four with Bishnu Ghosh, the younger brother of Paramahansa Yogananda (author of The Autobiography of a Yogi, and founder of the Self-Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles). Bikram practiced Yoga four to six hours every day at Ghosh's college of Physical Education in Calcutta. At the age of thirteen, he won the National India Yoga Championship. He was undefeated for the following three years and retired as the undisputed All-India National Yoga Champion. At seventeen, he endured a devastating injury to his knee during a weight-lifting competition. But with yoga, six months later, his knee was totally recovered. Bikram devised the 26 postures sequence, which has a profound healing power on your body and mind. He later founded Bikram's Yoga College of India, and with the help of his affiliated studios, has shown the light of healthy life to millions of people around the world.

As we focus on balancing stick here are our favorite cues to guide internally and externally! Cue #1 — Internal:
Feel your body lengthening in both directions at once: forward through the fingertips and back through the lifted heel.

Cue #2 — External:
Aim to create one straight line from your hands to your foot, keeping the hips level rather than letting them rotate open.

Posture of the Week: Standing Bow

Standing Bow Pulling Pose is a balancing posture where one hand holds the foot behind the body while the opposite arm reaches forward.

Cue #1
Feel the kick of your back leg driving the posture, rather than pulling the foot with your hand.

Cue #2
Reach your front arm forward and slightly upward as your back leg lifts, creating length in both directions.

Ever wondered what Bikram Yoga is? 🔥

Bikram Yoga is practiced in a heated room and follows the same sequence of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises every class. The repetition allows you to deepen your practice, improve strength and flexibility, and build mental focus over time.

The heat helps warm the muscles, encourages detoxifying sweat, and challenges both the body and mind. Whether it’s your first class or your hundredth, each practice is an opportunity to reconnect with your breath and grow a little stronger.

Eagle Pose is a balancing posture where one leg crosses over the other while the arms wrap together in front of the body. CUES: Feel the standing foot pressing evenly into the floor as the body stacks directly over it. Lift the elbows slightly while drawing the shoulders down the back to prevent tension in the neck.

Posture of the week Awkward Pose (Utkatasana)

Awkward Pose is a three-part standing posture involving knee flexion, hip control, and upright spinal alignment.

Strong legs protect the joints in every posture that follows. This posture builds that foundation for our practice.

Cues to guide your Utkatasana

- Feel the weight distributed evenly between the balls of your feet and your heels before lifting the heels in the third part.
- Keep your chest lifted and imagine sitting back into a chair rather than pushing your knees forward.

When your legs begin to shake, instead of labeling this as weakness ask yourself if you can stay here for one more breath.

Featuring this weeks posture on our new series where we dive deep into the postures or asanas that make Bikram Yoga so unique.

Head to feet pose
This posture is both a stretch and a compression. The key is allowing length first before we allow depth which will gradually develop.
Cues to help:
Instead of pulling your head to your knees think of lifting your hips to the ceiling. Allowing a micro bend in the knees is not weakness but allows your hamstrings and spine to be protected and hold integrity.
Stay connected to your thighs.
