The Oklahoma Brain Tumor Foundation may no longer be active as a foundation, but the Support Group that Nancy Miller started continues to meet every month at the Stevenson Cancer Center. We have a consistent group of 5-10 patients, caregivers and relatives that meet each month. If you fit any of those categories, you are always welcome and encouraged to attend.
My name is John Wood. On August 16th, 2014 I was diagnosed with a rare type of brain cancer. It took me over a year to go to my first support group meeting, and I've been going ever since. Nancy asked me to see about using this page to help spread the word about the Support Group remaining active, and to take a more active role in the group after over a decade participating.
The Brain Tumor/Cancer Support group meets the second Thursday of each month, at 6:30PM at the Stevenson Cancer Center. We've been meeting on the ground floor lobby due to the comfier chairs. We venture out to other locations at times, but those are special events and will be announced here, and sent out on our email list.
When you hear "Support Group" there is a lot of emotional baggage attached to that term, little of it being positive. Being diagnosed with cancer is a dehumanizing, traumatic event; our support group is full of people who have been there, and are willing to have the hard conversations your friends and families might not be willing to. Your feelings are valid, and there is a kinship to be found with people fighting the same fights you are going through. When I came to my first meeting I was afraid it would be a dour and depressing affair, It was not. We laugh together, we share our struggles, experiences, and tips together, and we enjoy the company of some of the best friends we never knew we were missing.
