💙 Putting patients first through greater transparency in pharmacy benefits

A recent HFMA article highlights how SSM Health is working to make prescription drug costs clearer and more affordable for the people we serve. Through our partnership with Navitus Health Solutions, we’re advancing a pharmacy benefit model that focuses on transparency and doing what’s best for patients.

In the article, Kevin Smith, SSM Health Chief Financial Officer, explains how this approach helps ensure patients and plan sponsors know exactly what they’re paying for:
“If you think about what the mission is for Navitus, it’s really about transparency… Whenever we are buying [drugs] either through a GPO or directly from a manufacturer, you know exactly what we’re paying for and what the specific markup is going to be.”

By removing confusing markups and keeping costs clear and consistent, this model supports more affordable medications and better outcomes for our communities.

SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital is pleased to share that the manuscript, “Healing the Divide: Bridging Physicians and Healthcare Administrators for Value-Based Care,” has been published in the American Journal of Medical Quality.

Authored by a multidisciplinary team—Dr. Tauseef Ali, Dr. Adam McConnell, Tammy Powell, President, SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital and Bone & Joint Hospital, and Kayla Stangl, Regional Director of Regulatory Compliance and Accreditation —the article addresses one of healthcare’s most pressing challenges: aligning physicians and administrators to improve trust, reduce burnout, and strengthen system performance.

The manuscript presents a practical framework focused on six key domains: shared vision and transparency, governance engagement, incentive alignment, reducing administrative burden, physician well-being, and organizational trust and culture. The central message is clear: health care systems perform best when clinical and administrative leaders move from parallel priorities to shared accountability. This work reflects SSM Health St. Anthony’s ongoing commitment to collaboration, resilience, and patient-centered care.

Dr. Tauseef Ali, gastroenterologist and Medical Executive Director of SSM Health St. Anthony Digestive Care, continues to elevate the organization’s national profile through thought leadership and interdisciplinary collaboration. Dr. Ali is a co-author of a newly published article in Healthcare Administration Leadership & Management Journal titled “Strategic Management in Clinical Gastroenterology.”

The article reflects a collaborative effort that bridges frontline clinical care, national gastroenterology leadership, and academic business strategy. Dr. Ali co-authored the manuscript alongside Costas H. Kefalas, vice president of the American College of Gastroenterology, and Jason Flores, faculty member at the University of Oklahoma School of Business.

“This work represents the kind of multidisciplinary collaboration that is increasingly essential in today’s healthcare environment,” Dr. Ali said. “By combining clinical insight with structured business strategy, we can better address the real-world challenges facing gastroenterology programs nationwide.”
