In 1933, SSM Health's founding sisters, the Sisters of St. Mary — known today as the Franciscan Sisters of Mary, opened the first Catholic school of nursing for African Americans. At a time when opportunities for Black students in healthcare were severely limited, these Sisters created a space where compassion, skill, and determination could flourish.

From 1933 to 1958, the school trained and graduated 377 African American nurses, empowering generations of women to break barriers and provide exceptional care to their communities. Their legacy lives on in every life touched by those graduates and in every healthcare professional who continues to push for equity and representation.

As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor these pioneering students, the Sisters who supported them, and the profound impact they made on nursing, education, and justice.
🕊️ Their courage opened doors. Their legacy continues to light the way.

The St. Mary’s Infirmary in St. Louis, opened by SSM Health's founding sisters in 1933, was a pioneering institution that opened critical pathways for African American medical professionals during segregation. Beginning in the 1930s, the infirmary organized training programs that offered African American students — especially women — the opportunity to learn X ray technology, a program that continued into at least the mid 1950s.

These efforts helped shape a new generation of skilled Black medical workers and expanded opportunities in fields that had long been inaccessible. Their legacy continues to inspire progress in healthcare equity today. 🖤✨

In 1946, five brave women became the Sisters of St. Mary’s first Black postulants—at a time when very few congregations in the U.S. welcomed Black sisters.
They left their homes to follow their calling in St. Louis, dedicating their lives to faith, service, and caring for the sick and vulnerable. Their legacy continues to inspire us.
