During World War II, an ophthalmologist was inspired by his work with injured pilots to develop Intra-ocular lenses (IOLs).

Flight Lieutenant Gordon Cleaver was injured when his cockpit was struck by a bullet and plastic shards were embedded in his eyes. Ophthalmologist Dr. Ridley was unable to remove all the plastic fragments from his eyes. He was surprised to discover over the next few years that his eyes tolerated the plastic shards with no inflammatory response. 

At this time Cataract surgeons removed the cloudy lens, but did not have a way to replace the lens. This left patients needing thick eyeglasses after surgery.

Dr. Ridley invented the intra-ocular lens (IOL) based on the concept that plastic would not be rejected inside the eye. This was a novel idea that faced a lot of backlash in the medical community and took decades to be widely accepted. It wasn’t until the 1970s that IOLs became a routine part of cataract surgery.
