As the holidays wrap up and decorations come down, you may be noticing something you've been avoiding: there’s far more holiday décor than ever actually gets used.
Boxes that haven’t been opened in years. Decorations tied to memories—but not to your current life. And a quiet sense that "at some point" or "someday" this will all need to be addressed.
If you’re thinking about a future move—or simply wanting less clutter—this is a great place and time to start.
Before you do anything drastic, a few important truths:
* If an estate sale is likely in your future, it’s usually best NOT to donate or give things away yet. Estate professionals prefer having more, not less, to work with.
* If decluttering IS the goal, progress works better in stages—not all at once, and not under pressure.
* Downsizing isn’t about getting rid of memories. It’s about deciding which ones you want to carry forward.
Simple action steps you can take now:
1. Choose an area to stage your things - a spare bedroom or formal dining table.
2. Sort décor into four groups:
- Keep (plans to use in the future)
- Give to family or friends (tell the story)
- Donate - (don't donate if planning an estate sale)
- Dispose (broken or heavily worn items with no sentimental value)
3. For items going to family, take a few minutes to write down the story behind them. That often matters more than the item itself.
4. Set a deadline for gifting—otherwise decisions linger.
5. Only repack what you intentionally have a plan to use.
Smaller spaces don’t mean smaller celebrations. They often lead to simpler traditions, fewer obligations, and more meaningful gatherings.
As you pack things away, ask yourself:
* What do I genuinely enjoy using each year?
* What am I holding onto out of habit, not desire?
* What do I want holidays to look like in the next chapter of my life?
Clarity now makes future decisions easier—whether a move is months away or years down the road.
You've Got This!
