Protecting your mental health throughout your birth mom journey is essential. 🩷

With it being Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to share these 3 tips to help you stay grounded during your adoption journey:
1️⃣ Talk to your Adoption Specialist – They’re not just here for logistics; they’re trained to support your emotional well-being and walk with you through the tough moments. They also have tools and resources to help you navigate the grieving process.
2️⃣ Ask for and accept help – Whether it’s a ride to an appointment, a shoulder to lean on, or just someone to listen, letting others support you isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of strength.
3️⃣ Find your support network – Surround yourself with people who listen without judgment. That could be trusted family, friends, a counselor, or a support group. DPA is also here for you through lifelong services including counseling at the DPA Counseling Center, special Birth Mom events throughout the year, and Search & Reunion services. We are just a phone call away.

✨ You are not alone. Prioritizing your mental health helps you make the best decisions for yourself and your baby—today and for the future.

We loved this graphic and just had to share. Whether you are a birth mom, an adoptive mom, a mom who has experienced infant loss or a mom who is struggling with their mental health, we are here.

Here at DPA we provide therapeutic counseling for anyone touched by adoption, foster care, maternal mental health or infertility. If you fall into one of these categories, reach out today by calling 405.949.4200 to learn more about what prioritizing your mental health could look like.

Sometimes, Mother's Day makes Birth Mothers feel that there is still healing to be done around their adoption journeys—and that’s okay. 🫶

No Birth Mother is ever done healing from her loss. She just learns to recognize the feelings, what to do with them, and how to move forward and live harmoniously with the loss.

It takes effort and purposeful determination to be well. It is also the best gift she can give to her Biological Child. 🎁

Did you know❓

According to an article from the National Conference of State Legislatures in 2019, "Up to 80% of children in foster care have significant mental health issues, compared to approximately 18-22% of the general population...Factors contributing to the mental and behavioral health of children and youth in foster care includes the history of complex trauma, frequently changing situations and transitions, broken family relationships, inconsistent and inadequate access to mental health services and over-prescription of psychotropic medications."

There is a great need for counseling services for those touched by foster care. We consider it an honor to serve all touched by foster care through our therapeutic counseling services.

At DPA, we believe it truly takes a village—and relationships are at the heart of everything we do. We're honored to walk alongside you through your mental health journey. 🧡 But we also know that the support you find outside the DPA Counseling Center is just as important. Connecting with other adoptive and foster families can make all the difference.

We’re excited to share two amazing local support groups: Chosen (OKC Adoption/Foster Ministry) and The Wrap Around Group. Both offer connection, encouragement, and community. 🙌

✨ Check out the graphics for more info! Please note: Both groups will be taking a break starting May 7th, but be sure to follow them online to stay in the loop on when they’ll start up again. You can find both of them by googling the name of the group and the church where they meet.

These are just two amazing local adoption and foster care support groups. If you know of others, we'd love to hear in the comments!
