This Veterans Day, OAPA is grateful to our service members, including the many PAs and patients who have served our country.

One of them, former U.S. Army serviceman and PA Mark Denney, recently embodied what it means to be a PA as he faced a battle for his own health. While working at the Oklahoma City VA, Mark noticed a sharp pain from his jaw to his right ear. A biopsy later confirmed cancer at the base of his tongue had spread to his lymph nodes.

Determined to keep caring for others, Mark continued his work as a PA as much as he could through chemotherapy and radiation, providing care at the VA while also receiving it. He made a full recovery, allowing him to attend his daughter’s wedding and, more recently, meet his first grandchild.

Mark’s story is an extraordinary example of the compassion, strength, and dedication PAs and veteran PAs bring to their patients every day.

PAs do that! Physician Associates (PAs) – also known as Physician Assistants – have a diverse range of practice areas and skill sets in health care. With recent changes, PAs can now do even more, such as prescribing medication and practicing independently after 6,240 hours (about 3 years of clinical practice).

With these updates, PAs are even more equipped to meet healthcare needs in rural and underserved communities, expanding access to timely, high-quality care across Oklahoma.
