Cartilage and bone defects (osteochondral defects) in the knee lead to arthritis and pain. Repairing those defects can restore normal function. This one was repaired with a transplant of bone and cartilage (osteochondral allograft transplant).

Cartilage defects of the knee can lead to arthritis and eventually knee replacement. Currently, there are several cartilage restoration options to prevent continued damage and arthritis. This patient had a cartilage defect under their knee cap, leading to severe pain. We restored her cartilage with a procedure called MACI, in which patient’s own cartilage is expanded and then inserted into the defects. This procedure will hopefully allow the patient to avoid a knee replacement in the future.

This is a proximal biceps tendon tear which caused severe shoulder pain for this patient. Often, these tears are associated with rotator cuff tears. Stabilizing the biceps tendon (called biceps tenodesis) and repairing the rotator cuff tear, if present, improves pain and function.
