Alcohol misuse remains a major public health concern in the United States. Each year, over 178,000 deaths are attributed to alcohol-related causes, making it one of the leading preventable causes of death. Alcohol contributes to more than 200 disease and injury-related conditions, including seven types of cancer, and is a significant factor in emergency department visits and traffic fatalities. Among adults, 26.45% report binge drinking in the past month, and 6.6% engage in heavy alcohol use, highlighting the ongoing need for awareness and intervention.

March is recognized as National Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Awareness Month (or Blood Clot Awareness Month) to educate the public on the risks, symptoms, and prevention of blood clots. DVT occurs when a clot forms in deep veins, usually the legs, which can travel to the lungs causing a life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE).
Symptoms: Swelling, pain, tenderness, or red/discolored skin, often in the calf.
Risks: Roughly 900,000 Americans are affected annually. Key risks include inactivity (long flights/bed rest), surgery, cancer, pregnancy, and birth control.
Prevention: Move around frequently, stay hydrated, and know your family history

Today is Diabetes Alert Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of knowing your risk. Over 40 million Americans are living with diabetes, yet one in four adults with diabetes don't know they have it. Symptoms of diabetes include:

Urinating often
Feeling very thirsty
Feeling very hungry (even though you are eating)
Extreme fatigue
Blurry vision
Cuts or bruises that are slow to heal
Weight loss—even though you are eating more (type 1)
Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands/feet (type 2)

"It's important to learn the symptoms of diabetes and understand risk factors for developing the disease. Early detection is essential to avoid diabetes-related complications, including heart, kidney, and eye disease, and more. For those with diagnosed diabetes, early action can help improve health outcomes," said Rita Kalyani, MD

If you're sneezing and congested, how do you know whether it's allergies or just a spring cold? "In general, colds tend to begin with one or two symptoms then gradually get worse. Allergy symptoms come on suddenly, usually after exposure to allergens, and may last much longer than a cold," says Kevin Wilson, MD, an allergist at University of Utah Health. While the two share many similarities, they have distinct differences.

1 in 5. That’s how many blood donors had results in the prediabetic or diabetic range when they had their A1C tested after giving blood with the Red Cross last year.

These findings are an important reminder that diabetes often goes unnoticed — and early awareness matters. Knowing your A1C can provide helpful insight into your blood sugar levels over the past three months and help inform next steps for your health.

We’re proud to expand our health offerings once again this Red Cross Month by providing free A1C testing to those who successfully donate blood in March (one result per calendar year). Make an appointment and gain valuable health insights: https://rdcrss.org/4sVJm5m
