Tip 2. Most children are curious about the world including their own and others’ bodies.

Children learn through all senses: listening, watching, smelling, and touching. Preschool aged children learn about all of their behaviors by watching the people around them and imitating them. They are also curious about bodies and how other people’s bodies are the same or different. This may mean that they play “doctor” or “house” with similar-aged friends. As they get older, children and adolescents will continue to have typical s*xual behaviors, although they learn to keep the behavior more private.

Tip 1. Sexual development starts in infancy and continues throughout childhood.

Don’t wait until children are 15 to talk about s*x education. Children are experiencing s*xual development from birth, and development goes beyond body parts. Sexual development includes children’s understanding of their own bodies, relationships to others, boundaries, and consent. Conversations with young children can provide developmentally appropriate education on body parts, and what’s okay and not okay, and conversations can advance as children develop.

Help empower kids with the tools they need to stay safe!

Personal safety doesn’t have to be a scary conversation. The Dakota Children's Advocacy Center created a really cool "Stop Go Tell" video. Uses age-appropriate language to teach children how to recognize boundaries and identify safe adults they can trust.

PSB Safety Planning

After parents determine that their child has indeed demonstrated problematic s*xual behaviors, they may have a variety of reactions and responses toward the child. It can be helpful for parents to find healthy ways to become calm and provide support. Remember that with close supervision and appropriate treatment, children can get back on a positive path.

The Sacred Circle and PSBs

What does the Sacred Circle mean?
The Sacred Circle refers to the balance of mind, body, spirit, and emotional/relational well-being. Historically, trauma, colonization, boarding school policies, violence, and abuse disrupted this balance; the RSC toolkit focuses on restoring it through healing and education.

What are Problematic Sexual Behaviors (PSB)?
PSBs or Problematic Sexual Behaviors are youth-initiated behaviors that are developmentally inappropriate, potentially harmful to themselves or others, or could be illegal. The toolkit and its fact sheets help communities distinguish between typical and problematic behavior and promote culturally appropriate responses.
