Not everything clicks right away. That's the point.

There was a technique I introduced early in the program that required more coordination than most — the kind of move where your hands, your body weight, and your intention all have to arrive at the same time. Some students got close quickly. Others just couldn't get there, and I could feel the frustration in the room. I kept teaching it. Session after session, a little more fluent, a little less tense. By the end, they'd learned the technique — but more than that, they'd learned how to learn something hard. That struggle is not the obstacle to learning. It is learning.

Save this for the next time a student (or you) wants to give up on something hard.

What my students have in common.

My students come from all over — different careers, different ages, different life situations. But what they share is almost always this: they're done. Done with a job that takes everything and gives back almost nothing. They come to massage school with something fragile and hopeful — the idea that this time, they could build something that actually feels like theirs. When they find it? It's like watching someone take a real breath for the first time in years. That's who I'm here for.

“Oh wow”

I watched a student search for a specific muscle, absorbing herself completely, repositioning her hands, adjusting pressure. And then she found it. The look on her face: not just relief. Recognition. A door opening. That moment is the whole point. Not just feeling a muscle, feeling what the textbook had been describing in language that meant nothing until her hands made it real.
