Help for the VERY common complaint of tailbone pain!

Hello! I’m Kaitlin, an instructor for the Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth. I don’t think I have ever done an introduction of myself or maybe just when I first started this page 😳 So, I thought I would take some time to share about myself.

I am a wife and mother. I homeschool my kids and am currently enjoying a summer break, as are they! Another hat I wear is being a flutist 🎶 I started playing flute at 11 years old and have a degree in flute performance. I still love music, so if you ever need some flute music, I’m here for it!
The thing that brought me into the birth world- of course God’s providence- was becoming pregnant with my first child. I knew for sure that I wanted to have an unmedicated birth, but I was terrified! The thought of my pelvis stretching (Isn’t that a bone?!), and the idea of pushing was so intimidating. I joke that when you’re not pregnant and you see a newborn baby, you think how sweet and tiny they are. Then when you’re pregnant and see a newborn, you start to realize, “Wait, that’s pretty big…”
Well my sister-in-law had taken Bradley classes and told us that she thought we would really like them. We found an instructor and signed up. I had no idea what an impact it would make! I think by around 6 weeks in, I had lost my fear of birth. There’s always a little unsureness, I think, because it’s something you’ve never done before. But I was not scared. I knew that I could do it and trusted that my body was designed well for birth.
After I had my baby, I had to recover, of course. Honestly, birth is a lot of hard work, so I didn’t immediately feel like it was amazing. But after my initial recovery, I looked back and thought, “That was really great! We got to do an unmedicated birth, and we worked as a team (my husband and I).” It was truly an amazing experience and life-changing. I felt a call to help other young parents work from fear to confidence and peace before birth.
My husband wisely recommended that I wait to finish my degree. Well, we got pregnant again 9 months later with our second daughter, and after that birth, I just knew that I had to go into childbirth education. I began the process in 2015 and became an instructor in 2016. I am so thankful for all these years as a Bradley instructor. The joy and fulfillment that comes from helping parents prepare for their babies is something I struggle to put into words.
Pregnancy can be such an exciting time for a family, and it is an honor to be brought into that space. I feel that teaching about childbirth gives me an opportunity to love others and offer support at a time when it is needed. One of my prayers is that God uses my work for good, and that I am able to positively impact the lives of my clients. I enjoy writing and don’t do it often anymore, so hopefully this wasn’t unbearably long 😅 But that’s me!

This graphic is intended to give perspective about the liklihood of things going well during birth. There is no doubt that the US Maternal Mortality Rate is too high. It is also essential to know how to talk with your provider when making decisions because complications can come up and intervention is sometimes needed. Along with this skill should come a positve mindset. We can make decisions as needed while recognizing that most births are likely to go smoothly.

For Class 8 we have a discussion about birth complications. We also talked a little about birth trauma prevention and the role that our relationship with our provider has. Communication leading up to birth about health, emotions, birth goals, etc. is important. Being respected by your provider and having a provider that you respect is essential to a holistically safe birth environment. One of the variations of birth that we went over is breech birth. A breech baby is one that is coming foot, feet, or buttocks first. The most common route of delivery in the US is cesarean section, but it is not the only option. Starting with trying to use positions, exercises, and therapies to encourage baby to flip head down, a vaginal cephalic (head down) birth may be preserved. There is also an option of external cephalic version to try to manually turn the baby from the outside, done by an OB or midwife. Lastly, vaginal breech birth has shown similar neonatal outcomes to c-section, and the group Breech Without Borders has resources for training providers and helping families find breech friendly providers. Each family will have their own unique case to consider as they weight out options for breech birth. As far as birth complications go, we went through some that could come up and options for handling them. Most women have no complications. It is important to be aware of them, know how to ask questions, and have an understanding that some decision must be made in the moment.
