It’s not everyday I get to tell you all one of my favorite birthday stories of all time! A patient asked me the other day while she was in labor about my first birth so I promised I’d post a birth story soon!
SIXTEEN years ago today I became a mama when my first born came Earthside. I hope this story will highlight some relatable points for you 💜
I was in my third year of medical school for this pregnancy. My sweet baby had only been head down for a few weeks by then and I was just grateful for that. It was a Monday morning and as I was sitting down for breakfast in the cafeteria, I started noticing regular and time-able contractions. They were mild but very regular. I continued with my everyday things and kept moving but they just wouldn’t stop. By the time we reached the evening, they were still every five minutes apart. I knew it wasn’t time to go in yet. Besides, I was terrified that my very amazing doc was out of town for the next few days and I was NOT having this baby until he was back.
Tuesday night rolled around and still the same contraction pattern. I went in to get checked- “only 2 centimeters?!”. Gah. Home we went.
Contractions continued to get worse and I was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday evening at 5 centimeters. By the time I got admitted, attempted to get an IV line (8 pokes later), and got to my room, things had fizzled out. By morning, I might have one contraction every hour or so. My doc offered me pitocin or to go home with a medication to help me relax and sleep. I chose to get discharged and go home.
I slept for eight solid hours!!! I got up and then we went and grabbed a sandwich at Subway. I also got a bag of chips and a cookie. This was my pregnancy with gestational diabetes so I really had not indulged much but I just needed a little extra that day. A few hours later, things were in full swing again. After several sleepless nights due to prodromal labor, this kid was finally going to come.
It was Thursday night now and I was admitted to the hospital at 7 centimeters and progressed normally and quickly. I remember some key moments during my time at the hospital…..
I vividly remember swaying and walking in the hallway with my doula and I said to her “I am going to die”. She sweetly responded to me “no Michelle- you’re just close to meeting your sweet baby”. After that, I took a shower and remember looking down at the bracelet that a group of women had each contributed a bead to with words of affirmation and wishes for my birth. Things were so so hard in that moment that I wanted to take the bracelet off thinking that I could no longer do this. When I couldn’t get it off because it was soaked and the twine was tangled, I decided it was a divine sign that I should just keep going and have this baby.
By the time I headed back to my room, I was close to 10 centimeters and my doc offered to break my water, which I happily accepted. I was done and ready to meet my baby boy. After less than 30 min of pushing in a standing position holding on to the squat bar, Ethan Xander arrived with the cord wrapped tightly around his neck twice and with a flood of meconium behind him. But he was here. Safe and sound in my arms.
He’s now taller than me and has amazing red hair and freckles. I love him so 💜
