Survival mode happens when our nervous system becomes dysregulated, typically from experiencing a traumatic event or prolonged periods of stress. It’s our bodies’ way of shutting down and protecting itself.
Being in survival mode can look different for everyone. Some people might experience more avoidance and chronic fatigue, while others may experience more defensiveness and difficulty with relaxing.
Once you’re able to recognize and acknowledge that you’re in survival mode, you can take steps toward regulating your nervous system and feeling safe in your body again.
After accepting that you’re in survival mode, these 5 action items can be helpful:
💜 Have self-compassion for what you’re experiencing, and speak more kindly to yourself.
🩷 Even if self-care feels impossible, start somewhere.
💜 Call a family member, friend, or loved one you trust that can be a supportive listening ear.
🩷 Celebrate the little wins throughout your week. No win is too small to celebrate!
💜 Find items on your plate that you can delegate and ask for help for from other people in your life.
I’m here to support you as you do the work to regulate your nervous system. Reach out to me today to schedule your consultation at alatherapycollective.com 💫
