We want to wish everyone a GREAT start to the school year!

Let's get the after-school conversation started by asking your child open-ended questions on the ride home. Here are a few suggestions...

What games did you play at recess?
What was the funniest thing that happened today?
Who made you smile today?
Who brought the best food in their lunch today? What was it?
If you had the chance to be the teacher tomorrow, what would you teach the class?
What is your teacher’s most important rule?
What is the most popular thing to do at recess?
What is one thing you did today that was helpful?
When did you feel most proud of yourself today?
What rule was the hardest to follow today?
Does anyone in your class have a hard time following the rules?

Have a great year! 😀

Ear Infections

Ear infections are one of the most common childhood illnesses. These bacterial or viral infections which affect the space around the ear drum are often painful because of fluid in the middle ear. Frequent and recurring pediatric ear infections can be cause for concern because of the potential for hearing loss. Children are more susceptible to ear infections because of their immature immune systems, anatomy and exposure to multiple pathogens.

Symptoms of Ear Infection:
Fever
Nighttime crying
Trouble sleeping
Difficulty hearing
Fluid leaking out of ears

If you suspect your child might have an ear infection, Contact us to make an appointment. At Pediatric ENT of Oklahoma, we will diagnose the ear infection and look for signs of healthy ear canal development.

Noisy Breathing – Stridor

If your child makes noises while breathing, it may be an indication of a respiratory problem.

Noisy breathing or a high-pitched, wheezing sound often called “stridor” typically indicates an airway obstruction. Laryngomalcia is the most common cause of stridor, but other causes include vocal chord paralysis, subglottic stenosis and external compression of the trachea.

There are three types of stridor; inspiratory, expiratory, biphasic. Each type of stridor is caused by a different mechanism and treatment is based on the type and severity.

At Pediatric ENT of Oklahoma, every treatment plan is customized to meet the needs of our young patients. Call 405.608.8833 to request an appointment.

Tonsils & Adenoids

The tonsils are two lumps located at the back of the throat which work to sample bacteria and viruses that enter the body through the mouth or nose. They can be susceptible to recurring infections and periods of inflammation, known as tonsillitis. In some children, inflamed tonsils can cause airway obstruction, difficulty breathing and can even contribute to snoring or adenotonsillar hypertrophy.

Tonsillitis Symptoms:
Red, swollen tonsils
White coating over the tonsils
Sore throat
Painful swallowing
Fever

The adenoid is similar to the tonsils and is located in the upper part of the throat, behind the nose. Some children are born with an enlarged adenoid. For others, an enlarged adenoid indicates infection. Removal of tonsils and/or enlarged adenoid is not as common as it once was. However, removal is still an effective option for children who struggle with recurrent tonsillitis, resistant to other treatment.

If your child shows any signs of tonsillitis or enlarged adenoid, make an appointment with one of our specialists at Pediatric ENT of Oklahoma. A prompt, accurate diagnosis is key to ensuring your child’s long-term health. Call 405.608.8833 to request an appointment.
