✨TWO WEEKS AGO, TODAY✨

Lauren and I got to witness the birth of this beautiful baby sister at the .

This is a repeat client for us both & the 3rd baby sister for this family. The end of this pregnancy was everything she had worked for and prepared for this being their final pregnancy journey. This mom did such a good job with being intentional about her postpartum support plan. Including doula and lactation care.

Thank you W family, it has been an honor to care for you in this journey. We are so proud of you and so grateful for your trust. 🩷

Continuing to catch up on July’s baby marathon. This honey baby took 40+ hours to get into her parents arms 🥹

In the first occurrence EVER for this Midwife, a clients waters released in her CLINIC appointment 🤣💦

Contractions began relatively easily with gentle nudging. Trying all the things at home without progress + exhaustion + positioning of sweet baby’s head in the pelvis = needing support assistance.

We were able to transfer in for much needed rest, assistance with our contraction strength to finish dilating and help for the big push 🩷

Such a precious welcome into the world for this girl. She has such incredibly dedicated and loving parents.🩷

This family is doing well postpartum healing a growing. They are receiving excellent lactation care and we are continuing postpartum care as planned.

L family, we are honored to be caring for you and watching you grow into parenting this sweet girl. It looks good on you 🥹

🌱The evening of July 4th Lauren and I got a most welcome text about the release of fluids with some gentle contractions beginning for this sweet first time family 🩷

🌱They labored SO beautifully together over the next 10 hours. Their sweet baby was born and lifted to her own chest in her own time. With such sweet relief for both parents🥹

🌱Immediate postpartum care required some extra help and a hospital admitting. However, both momma and baby did so well and we picked up postpartum care from their discharge and they are thriving 3 weeks postpartum. 🥰

🌱This handsome guy is already 1lb over his birth weight and getting plumper by the day and his momma is doing such a great job and nurturing herself and allowing others to serve and care for her and her wonderful husband.

🌱As always, we are so grateful for hospital care teams that place patient care as a priority when we have the need for organized, swift medical assistance. That kind of integration saves lives and statistically reduces harm to the mom, baby, partner dyad. The experiences we have in childbirth shape our perceptions of ourselves and how we care for our infants and partners long term. It can also contribute to how we choose to grow our families (or not) in the future.

Yes, consciousness existed in the womb. This is known to the human carrying the baby and those who interact with the baby from the outside regularly.

Can consciousness begin before birth? Groundbreaking brain imaging studies suggest it might.

At a conference hosted by NYU, researchers explored emerging evidence that signs of consciousness could appear in fetuses late in pregnancy. Using fMRI and MEG scans, scientists observed key neural patterns—such as the default mode network and "small-world" brain architecture—developing around 35 weeks gestation. These patterns are linked to awareness in adults and are disrupted by anesthesia and brain injury.

Even more striking, fetuses at 35 weeks responded to complex sound patterns—something previously thought to require a conscious memory process. While most scientists agree a fertilized egg isn't conscious and a preschooler is, this new research tries to pinpoint when the transition occurs.

The findings carry profound implications: from neonatal intensive care protocols to the ethics of pain management in premature infants—and even debates around abortion law.

But experts caution against drawing absolute lines. Consciousness may emerge gradually and differently in each brain. As neonatologist Dr. Topun Austin says, “You can’t define a hard boundary. The science isn’t there yet—but we’re getting closer.”

These findings challenge historical practices and perceptions, including outdated medical procedures that once overlooked infant pain sensitivity. As imaging technologies advance, we may better understand consciousness not as a fixed state, but as a developing continuum beginning far earlier in life than once imagined.

As a Birthworker, you work with a lot of families - and if you’ve worked in birth any amount of time, it’s possible you’ve worn many hats. Doula, childbirth educator, lactation.. etc. Sometimes, when you support someone’s big sister as their Doula and they witness as a young woman what that looks like….

That little sister ends up hiring you as her midwife someday 🥹🩷

YOU GUYS 🥰

This couple worked *w o r k e d* for their baby.

The labor wasn’t long, but due to positioning of the fetal head *deflexed & asynclitic* she was asked to push and change positions as long as she labored it seemed. Awe inspiring efforts and hard work produced such a precious gift in this first born son 🩷

P family, it’s been an absolute pleasure and honor to care for you as you start your family. 🩷

That’s how you pivot 🤷🏼‍♀️ That’s how they pivot🩷

Finding words that do this family and this birth justice is such a challenge.

Navigating a placenta previa & planning a surgical birth for your 5th baby after very normal pregnancies and very normal homebirths is a h u g e shift.

However, it’s THIS family who did hard things with the genuine beauty of both tears and grace by choosing to advocate and plan for the most memorable birth experience for their family with the shift in mindset is awe inspiring. 🥹

We were able to provide modified Midwifery care prenatally while closely monitoring medical needs along side a consulting OB which was SUCH a helpful experience. Being able to integrate two models of care in the interest of the client/patient safety, care + experience as BOTH are incredibly important and contribute to the overall physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of moms and babies. Once discharged from hospital, we picked right back up with our usual postpartum care plans 🩷

Congratulations H family on this perfect little sister. Thank you for having us be apart of your care team. We are SO proud of your strength and determination 🥹
