Spirited Birth is passionate about providing compassionate Midwifery and Doula care to Oklahoma City area families. Throughout the pregnancy and births of both of my children I developed an immense passion for pregnancy and birth. I believe that birth is a sacred event that deserves to be nurtured and respected. The full blood moon 🌕 brought this sweet baby earthside at the nearly two weeks ago for an awesome set of repeat clients with a bit of a longer labor than her first. She navigated the differences with grace and patience with the lovely support of her husband. After birth, an herbal bath was in order.

A rainbow 🌈 baby too, making it that much sweeter! (A baby after miscarriage)

I remember when I was waiting to go into labor with my VBAC baby I experienced a few days of prodromal labor and frequent Braxton Hicks that would frustrate me as they fizzled out.

At 41+ weeks and a day of start and stop contractions, after a good cry and a family dance party in my living room I went to bed, finally at peace with my baby's timing. I woke up in labor the next morning, finding gratitude for the surges that I so desperately wanted, as a mom whose previous labor ended in surgery, I wanted to FEEL them.

What if we experienced joy and gratitude in labor?
How would our experience shift? For me, it was profound in reducing my discomfort and helping me be more at ease. ❤️

Sometimes birth asks more of a family than they ever imagined. 😮‍💨

Induction for preeclampsia for a first time family in the hospital 3 weeks ago. A powerful natural birth supported by husband and doula Hope with , myself and assistant Lauren with Sparrow Song Birth.

Then an unexpected NICU journey after baby was diagnosed with a case of rare pulmonary hypertension that is undetectable until birth.

Through every twist and turn, this mama showed what maternal strength looks like, determined, and deeply devoted to her baby, countless hours bedside in the NICU, attached to a pump, barely eating some days, tears seemingly endless, she shows up.

It was an honor to witness this family bring their baby into the world.

Grateful for the help and support of Dr. Michelle Brunnabend for this birth. 🙏

As a midwife, I often see two transitions in labor.

The obvious one around 8-10cm, yes, when active labor turns to transition right before the urge to push.

However, there's often another transition, especially for first timers, as they enter active labor between 3-6cm when the early labor pattern often shifts in intensity from ignorable to learning how to surrender and cope. It's like a mountain and a false summit, you may feel like you are at the top when you have more to climb.

Uterine activity intensifies, contraction spacing stabilizes, and the nervous system begins shifting from early labor adaptation to active labor processing.

Emotionally, this is where doubt can surface.
Clinically, it’s normal progression.

Psychologically, it’s the pivot from excitement to surrender.

About 6 weeks ago, a beautiful set of repeat clients found themselves in a position to need a medically necessary transfer for blood pressure and pre-eclampsia concerns. Securing a collaborative physician meant that this family was able to preserve most of their birth preferences and stay empowered every step of the way.

About 6 weeks ago, a repeat set of SBS clients navigated some tough decisions in an effort to bring their twins earthside safely and with the support of their supportive OB Dr. Michelle Brunnabend they were able to achieve an empowered surgical birth.

We customized a package for me to provide prenatal visits and on-call birth/postpartum care so this family could still have the midwife touch for their hospital experience.

6 weeks ago a repeat set of clients brought their first boy earthside with such tender sweetness. A labor experience that looked different than her "normal" precipitous births meant time for the birth pool and photography this time which was its own blessing.
