Continuing education weekend, had to bring the lumbar roll since I’m not used to sitting for essentially 9 hours straight (nobody should be).

A lumbar roll is the cheapest, most portable solution to supporting your low back during long bouts of sitting, giving you a bit more variability in low back positioning and keeping you out of mild flexion for hours on end.

Develop the identities and behaviors necessary to achieve your desired outcome. Don’t get caught chasing the outcome alone, and risk giving it up soon after because you haven’t developed the identities and behaviors it takes to hang onto for the long term.

Over here, we’re chasing behavioral and identity level shifts that produce long-lasting outcomes as a natural consequence.

There are endless options for where to put your time, money, and energy for attempting to improve your health. Choosing the right ones, the ones that will give you the biggest return for your inputs, isn’t always easy.

As a health coach for dads, and a rehab chiropractor my job is to understand where your at in your journey and suggest the right product, service, or behavior for getting you the result your looking for, but it’s not always an easy job when 99% of the things people need aren’t flashy or sexy.

Drink your water. Move your body. Eat whole foods. Get some sun. Socialize with people you like. Sleep. Spend time in nature. Love your family.

Much beyond that is just extra, and if you’re doing the things listed above and have the time, money, and energy to do extra, go ahead! But don’t make the mistake of majoring in the minors.

If you’re curious what rolls around with us to the park 👆🏼so that I can get a decent workout in.

None is NECESSARY to get a good workout at a park as there’s plenty of options for body weight but it all adds exponentially more options for exercises and training techniques with every new implement you add.

All in, this (mostly used) equipment list costs me less than $200, I’ve had much of it for years, and it’ll continue to serve me for years to come — not a bad investment for improved fitness whether we’re headed to a playground, on a road trip, or just need some exercise at the house.

“I’m all done, dad!” And you see this.

It’s a trap.

In our house, we aren’t advocates of making our toddler finish her plate for the sake of finishing it, as we aren’t trying to form a habit of eating food your body doesn’t need to appease some made-up rule that says you have to have a clean plate at the end of a meal (and it’s an absolute crapshoot knowing how much she will or won’t eat at any given sitting), which means many plates we serve her end up looking like this.

It’s a trap.

If you’re like me you look at this and think 2 things.

1 — that’s not really enough worth saving and, 2 — Its just a few bites for me I might as well finish it.

And that’s the trap. You have already eaten your entire meal and are likely plenty satisfied and full. You don’t NEED any more food right now, even if it’s just a few bites.

These few bites, cleaned up after your kids’ meals can add up (sometimes equaling hundreds of calories a day) and if you’re already consistently at or above your necessary calorie count, they can mean additional and unwanted fat gain on a long enough timeline.

But adding calories is not the only thing you’re doing when you clean up their plates — you’re also regularly ignoring or repressing your awareness of proper hunger cues. You check in after your meal to find you’re satisfied with the amount you ate of your own plate, and then ignore it anyways to eat more. This regular repression of your hunger cues only serves to blunt your awareness of them going forward — and that awareness is one of the most powerful tools you have against overeating the amount you need to maintain good health and a good relationship with food and hunger.

So here’s what you can do about it — save it anyways (they may or may not eat it as a snack, or you can when your hunger returns) or understand that having a toddler unfortunately means there will be a bit more food waste (because some days/meals they eat like birds and others they eat like ogres), or get some backyard chickens 🐓 to feed these scraps to, and get eggs in return (highly recommend).

The modern condition demands that you do some mobility work. Here are the facts as I see them.

📍It doesn’t have to be a lot of time, but it does have to be frequent, something small daily.

📍The earlier on in your adult life you start the better, it’s far easier to maintain than to lose and need to regain.

📍 Control of movement should be a priority, the difference between a solid mobility drill and an injury is the amount of control you exhibit.

📍 Good mobility alone won’t bulletproof you, it’s a huge factor, but for true longevity and injury avoidance you need a sweet combination of mobility, stability, and wise loading.

Don’t let the influencers fool you, health can be simple. Not easy, but simple.
