The other day, as I labored with a strong momma working hard to bring her baby into her arms, I once again got to witness the therapeutic power of water that no doubt helped this momma avoid unwanted interventions and achieve her natural birth goals.

The warm showerhead beating down on her back was just the trick to give her maximum relief while allowing her to be upright, standing and squatting, to work with gravity to labor her baby down. The soothing rhythm kept her blood pressure in a safe enough range to stave off further medications and some proposed interventions. The enclosed space was like a sacred, primal nook that gave her privacy and security from distractions, bright lights, and questions (except for my prompt hydration reminders 😉). Her sister and I took turns giving her back rubs, cool rags, and hip massages.

When you are planning your natural birth, do not forget the power of our most readily available pain management tool - WATER!!!! It’s like nature’s epidural! This birth happened in a hospital. When you are choosing your birth location, make sure you are asking how they feel about showers in labor. Unfortunately some birthing suites have them just for show and have so much red tape around using them. Odd, I know. Thankfully this hospital and the OB were incredibly accommodating!

Prospective client: What’s your experience?

Me: I can change a diaper without taking a single foot out of the footie pajamas.

One of my favorite parts of being a doula is birth education. I love explaining the stages of labor to my clients and what to expect no matter the mode of birth.

Most of all, I love watching my clients ask questions, understand the labor/birth lingo used by staff, and be an active participant in their care. I’m so happy when their provider asks if they’ve taken a childbirth education course and they can say “my doula went over this with us!” đŸ„ș. And yes, dads are always included because it’s important for them to know what’s happening when it’s go time too! We love a dad that doesn’t panic during transition 😎.

Hiring a doula is SO much more than contraction timing and hip squeezes.

That feeling when a potential client reaches out for a birth interview a year after your last interactions and says “you always made me feel comfortable” đŸ„șđŸ„ș.

That’s what being a doula really means to me. It is really such an honor to be the person that pops into someone’s mind when they are contemplating who they want in the delivery room. Also goes to show how being a doula isn’t something you can turn “off”. It’s just who you are!

When shopping for a doula - pick that person who clicks with you.

If you want to increase your chances of a safe and successful VBAC, spontaneous labor is the way to do it.

If you want to increase your chances of a safe and successful VBAC, spontaneous labor is the way to do it.

The often-cited uterine rupture rate after two cesareans of 0.9% – 1.8% is based on a 49% – 65% induction and augmentation rate. This is an important factor to consider anytime we discuss VBA2C (vaginal birth after two cesareans.)

As a result, it’s possible that the rate of uterine rupture during a spontaneous labor after two cesareans is lower than 0.9% – 1.8%. In fact, Macones revealed that of the 379 people who labored spontaneously, 3 had a uterine rupture for a rate of 0.8%.

Beware of companies trying to get your dollar based on the premise of “sleeping through the night”.

They know you’re tired. They know you’re desperate. I cannot stand when companies play this card.

I’m just here to tell you that there is absolutely nothing wrong with your baby or your parenting if your baby is waking up throughout the night. You’re doing amazing and a diaper isn’t going to fix biology.
