CranioSacral Therapy

It’s a pretty tight space to hang out in mama’s womb for 9 months. Sometimes, during their stay and on their way into this world, babies can get into some precarious positions! CranioSacral Therapy is a very light touch therapy that invites the tissues of the body to find good space and find their natural rhythms again. Nerves, blood vessels, craniosacral fluid, and bones all need good space to function. The communication between brain and muscles can suffer when important structures don’t have room to do their jobs. This causes our little ones to feel stuck and tight. We want our nerves firing and our body’s systems primed for optimal functioning.

Pre and Post Revisions
Let’s get our nervous systems calmed down first! The mouth is where we breathe and eat, which helps us feel safe and allows us to bond. If our nervous system is stressed, it’s hard to learn new skills, absorb nutrients to thrive, and connect with people.

Babies use their whole body to breastfeed.
Tight hips lead to tight lips.
Clenched hands carry tensions from other parts of our bodies.
Heads and necks stuck in a position make it difficult to protect our airway when eating.
If it doesn’t feel safe, comfortable, or easy, we don’t want to eat. Little clues throughout their body guide us to help them find relief from tension.

Post release, we have to learn how to use our new range of motion. Together, we can help your baby connect their new skills to their brain to create efficient and effective sucking habits.

What's the deal with primitive reflexes?

Many reflexes should be present at birth to help babies root, latch, suck, swallow, and breathe. Movement, from inside our mouths, down to our toes, helps grow our brains and meet developmental milestones. There are a variety of reasons why reflexes might not be present at birth. Don’t worry; there are simple movements we can do to bring these reflexes in and get babies back on course.

Before a tongue tie release, I want babies to show me they have their sucking reflex turned on. Gumming, thrusting their tongue, and licking are not effective sucking patterns AND they often cause mom a lot of pain. Reflex work combined with suck training help improve sucking patterns to possibly avoid a release or to set you up for better outcomes after an oral tether (tongue, lip, buccal) release.

In light of the formula shortages, we felt it was important to provide some resources for peer to peer breastmilk donation for anyone interested in this option. If you have milk to offer or if you are in need of milk, please click on the links for your respective state to be directed to informal milk sharing pages. This is by no means an exhaustive list so let us know if we missed any!

If you have formula you can donate to a mama in need, comment below with your location and what you have available. Please DM us if we can help to track down any specific formula needs — we want to support you in any way we can. ❤️

Its about that time again...to let you know that it is NOT time to cut back your perennial gardens yet.

With the official start of Spring less than a week away and absolutely gorgeous temperatures as far as the forecast can see, we know it’s hard to resist jumping into the Spring clean-up process, but remember, this is Nebraska and the weather can turn on a dime!

You may have heard the general rule of thumb that it is safe to cut back your gardens once the day temperatures reach a steady 50 degrees F. While we're definitely going to be a lot warmer than that this week, the second half of the rule also requires that the threat of a hard freeze has completely passed. The average last freeze in Lincoln generally occurs sometime during the last week of April, so we still have the potential for a lot more Winter, and keeping those dead sticks, stems, and leaves around just a little while longer is imperative to ensure that all of the native insects and other critters utilizing those materials for shelter still have access to them when the temperatures inevitably drop again.

So please, we ask that you resist the urge to clean up your gardens this week and wait until at least mid, if not late-April. The pollinators will thank you!

And as always, when it does come time to cut everything down for the year, remember to try and leave approximately 12-18 inches of the dead stalks standing so that our many species of stem-nesting bees can utilize them to successfully rear their offspring.

The wonderful graphic below (click to see the full image) developed by Heather Holm, Elaine Evans, Colleen Satyshur, and Sarah Foltz-Jordan shows the importance of this practice in the year-long lifecycle of this amazing group of pollinators!
