I work with nearly all of my clients on determining their core values as a starting place for making the change they came to me seeking.
It’s not uncommon for people to be resistant to identifying their core values. Common reasons I see come up are:
- having a partner who’s values are at odds with your own
- feeling afraid to face the decisions you’ve made that oppose those values
- needing to enforce new boundaries in support of the values
But the one I’ve seen come up over and over since about 2020 is that people are afraid to identify their core values because they’re afraid that they’ll be ridiculed for being imperfect at embodying those values.
We have to stop cutting off our noses to spite our face. Let’s take this time of great despair and join with one another to make meaningful change.
