This is what a herniated disc looks like from the inside.
What you’re seeing is a spinal disc bulging backward into the spinal canal, directly compressing the nerve.
Normally, the disc sits between the bones of the spine and acts like a cushion. It has a tough outer layer and a softer inner core.
But when that outer layer weakens—
The inner material pushes out.
That’s what’s happening here.
From this angle, you can clearly see:
• The disc bulging backward
• The nerve being compressed
• The space around the nerve narrowing
And that’s the key.
The pain doesn’t come from the disc itself.
It comes from pressure on the nerve.
As that pressure builds:
• Pain can shoot down the leg
• Tingling or numbness develops
• Muscle weakness can occur
This is why even a small herniation can cause severe symptoms.
This is a herniated disc—where disc material pushes into the spinal canal and compresses the nerve—and it’s one of the most common causes of sciatica.
