Seasonal Safety Reminder: Holiday Rush ≠ Safety Pause

The end-of-year push brings tighter schedules, longer hours, and added stress - and that combination can increase risk if we’re not careful.

Why this matters:
• Nearly half of employers report an increase in incidents during the holidays
• Rushed projects are linked to skipped inspections and serious falls
• Fatigue plays a role in 1 in 8 workplace injuries
• Long hours and reduced rest can impair judgment across all industries - from manufacturing and logistics to retail and office settings

Simple steps that make a big difference:
✅ Prioritize rest - aim for adequate sleep and reasonable recovery time between shifts
✅ Build in breaks and rotate tasks to reduce fatigue

❄️ Winter Weather = New Risks for Industrial Facilities ❄️

As winter settles in, many of our Northern clients face a unique set of seasonal safety and maintenance challenges. Cold temperatures, snow, ice, and reduced daylight can quickly turn routine operations into high-risk conditions if not properly managed.

This becomes even more critical during forced outages. When unplanned or emergency outages arise - like the active forced outages we’re currently supporting for power generation clients - compressed timelines, extended shifts, and non-routine work are layered onto already harsh winter conditions. Seasonal hazards can escalate rapidly without focused attention and experienced oversight.

Common winter issues we see in the field include:
• Icy walking and working surfaces at access points, cooling towers, HRSGs, ladders, and elevated platforms
• Frozen or poorly insulated piping, valves, and fire protection systems
• Reduced equipment reliability due to cold-weather startups and thermal stres
• Temporary heating solutions creating ignition or carbon monoxide hazards
• Limited visibility during early morning or overnight work
• Increased confined space risks from weather-related changes in ventilation and access

Winter readiness starts with proactive planning: and the end of the year is an ideal time to do it.

As facilities close out the year, reviewing procedures, emergency response plans, rescue protocols, and training schedules helps ensure teams are prepared before the next outage, weather event, or critical task.
