PSA: Most of you are getting scammed by people claiming to be selling rattlesnake products. Vertebrae and ribs.

I’ve seen a lot of people selling supposed ribs with holes drilled in them to make earrings and necklaces.

Most of those, if not all, are not rattlesnakes. More than likely they are from pythons and boas or they are fake.

The biggest rattlesnake in the world is the Eastern Diamondback. It gets up to about 15lbs. Their vertebrae can be up to about the size of a penny or so (depending on where in the body it came from). However, ribs are thin no matter what kind of rattlesnake it is.

The picture attached is from a medium sized sidewinder. Ribs do not get much thicker than this (they’re usually up to about 2-3” long at most) and definitely not thick enough to realistically drill holes through, especially without breaking them.

So anyway, I call BS.

Another snake that tends to get misidentified is the long-nosed snake. They look like California Kingsnakes but they have that pretty red where California Kingsnakes are banded black and white only.
