Intandem Honors Longtime Family Care Providers
Olean, NY — Intandem’s Family Care Program held its annual Family Care Dinner on Thursday, October 16th, at Mickey’s Restaurant in Olean to celebrate the dedication of providers who open their homes to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
This year’s honorees were Tracy and Tom Jaskolka, recognized for 15 years as Family Care providers. Over the years, the Jaskolkas have welcomed several individuals into their home, providing a supportive and nurturing environment.
Tracy shared that her journey began unexpectedly.
“I was working with someone who was in a situation, and basically I took her home with me,” she said. “I spent the next two years getting my license because the need was there. I wanted her to be in a safe place.”
Now licensed since 2010, Tracy and Tom say their home runs smoothly thanks to teamwork and understanding.
“We have a nice mesh now,” said Tracy. “We all have our own jobs in the house, and it just makes it flow.”
In addition to her Family Care role, Tracy has worked for Intandem for 29 years as a Community Habilitation Specialist. Her children, now grown, were raised alongside the individuals she has supported.
“They still are good supports for us and would drop anything to help,” she added.
Also recognized were Suzanne and Bob Pettie, and Ann Sutter, for their many years of service.
For Ann, the experience has been one of learning and connection.
“I’ve learned patience — that’s the biggest thing,” she said. “She’s very crafty, and now I listen to her and hear myself talking.”
The Petties reflected on the bonds built over decades.
“We don’t know how it is without them,” said Bob. “They’re family.”
“You have to treat them like family,” added Suzanne. “I always say, ‘You live here; this is your home.’”
At one time, Intandem supported more than 25 Family Care homes throughout Cattaraugus County. The program continues to offer an incredibly rewarding experience for those interested in making a difference by providing a safe, nurturing home environment. Intandem’s Family Care Program offers 24-hour supports to its providers, including on-call assistance, respite opportunities, and guidance from a dedicated team of professionals to ensure both the providers and individuals receive continuous, quality care.
