What is the role of the pelvic floor during pregnancy and labor? Many woman believe they need to spend their pregnancy strengthening their pelvic floor in order to have an easier time pushing during labor.

Well, yes and no?

During pregnancy, the pelvic floor continues to hold the pelvic organs up, support the increasing weight of the growing baby, and maintain continence. During pregnancy, having a strong pelvic floor is quite useful!

However, the role of the pelvic floor during labor is often misunderstood. It may be surprising to learn that these muscles should actually be relaxing during labor! Just like when you are urinating or passing bowels, your pelvic floor muscles are relaxing and allowing the vaginal passage to expand so that your baby can enter the world.

Working on strengthening is just as important as working on relaxation of the pelvic floor. Working with a pelvic floor therapist can help you connect to your pelvic floor and ensure optimal coordination in order for you to take control of your birthing process!

The Healthy Pelvis offers in-person or online appointments to women who are pregnant, postpartum, or experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction. Call or book online today! 716-790-9173 🌿

Do you have a tight or weak pelvic floor?

Most people with pelvic floor symptoms have muscle imbalance - the muscles are actually too short and tight. Short and tight muscles don’t work well…which can feel like weakness. Occasionally, some women just have weakness - their pelvic floor aren’t working well but it’s not due to tightness. Ultimately you can have a weak pelvic floor, a tight pelvic floor, or a combination of both!
