WarHorses for Heroes

WarHorses for Heroes is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing equine-assisted therapy programs for veterans

WarHorses for Heroes provides Memphis area veterans the ability to interact with other veterans and horses in a variety of activities, building their skills and confidence as they advance through the program. Sessions are led by either our own therapist or one with the VA and a PATH certified instructor. Recreational therapy like this is proven to build self-esteem, stability and connections, and it’s our goal to help the heroes of our country heal emotionally and physically. We never have, and never will charge our veterans for our services. We rely on you, our donors, and dedicated volunteers to keep our equine therapy sessions going.

Rocky is our smallest WarHorse with a HUGE personality. He provides laughs and an opportunity to interact with a much smaller equine therapy partner.

Today is the LAST day to send your ❤ ! Take a moment to watch WarHorses Cinnamon and Sunny enjoying theirs.

These ladies came to us in 2021 along with Cinnamon's late mother, Sky. Cinnamon is inquisitive and expressive, giving lots of laughs, meanwhile Sunny enjoys soft words and gentle brushes.

These candy grams come from Dorothy, Dawn, Karen, Shellye, and Alison. These two girls say "thank you!"

Note: If you have already sent a candy gram but have not see your "thank you," fear not! We will continue posting through March until all grams have been delivered!

We can't forget about Honorary WarHorse Lilah!

Lilah is a well-rounded mare who is great for teaching first timers or intermediate level riders! She's been a therapy horse for many years now, and we can't wait to watch her help more veterans in the future.

We had a very exciting weekend at WarHorses for Heroes!

On Saturday, we attended the Bluff City Fire and Ice Chili Cook Off and Polar Bear Plunge! We were honored to win 2nd place (thanks to volunteer Lois Ann Matlock )!

On Sunday, we hosted one of our largest volunteer training days with a total of 21 volunteers, 11 of whom were completely new to us! Everyone had a great time learning how to keep our veterans safe during their time with our horses.

Back to the candy grams! Today, Thor is the star! First, we would like to thank Dorothy, Alison, and Dawn for sending Thor some love.

Thor is our gentle giant whose temperament is perfect for teaching new veterans how to interact with such a large animal. Thor also pulls a carriage, and our hope is to 1 day have him teach veterans to drive as well!

WarHorses for Heroes has a surprise! Throughout the years, we have made various adjustments to our facilities to make it more handicap accessible, but there was one large milestone we could never quite get past: making the parking lot and entrance to the barn wheelchair friendly.

Thanks to -Roberts, A Granite Company we achieved this goal! As part of their MLK Days of Service Project, they donated the materials and labor to us to achieve this. Our parking lot now has official wheelchair accessible parking and an ADA compliant level path to the barn.

Due to their kindness, we can now more easily accommodate mobility impaired veterans. Please take a moment to thank them for their generosity, and consider using their services for your construction needs.
