Tomorrow is Rare Disease Day, and Aveanna is proud to spotlight and support our patients who live with rare diseases.

Eight-year-old Axel lives with Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD), a rare genetic disorder that affects the nervous system. Since he was diagnosed with MLD in 2020, Axel has become fully dependent on his family and nursing team for care. For his mom, Lexi, joining Aveanna meant finding the specialized care her son needed after years of visiting specialists and balancing the responsibilities of her family.

"Aveanna’s team has been absolutely amazing for Axel," said Lexi. "I cried when they had a nurse ready to start with us on Christmas Eve because I finally felt like we found the missing pieces of our village to help fully support Axel’s needs."

Lexi feels as though a boulder has been lifted off her shoulders with the help of her Aveanna team. With Nurse Crystal able to monitor his breathing, medication, supply orders, and functioning, Lexi can rest assured that Axel is safe while she raises her other child and tends to her own needs.

"Having nurses in our home, part of our family, supporting Axel like I do means I don’t have to be 'nurse' anymore, I can just be 'Mom,'" said Lexi. "That is all I have ever wanted, and now it is a reality for us. We couldn't be more grateful."

Before Kenny began services with his Aveanna team in 2019, he faced numerous challenges with feeding and congenital conditions. His family sought a team who would stand beside them with skill, compassion, and relentless commitment.

That is exactly what they found with Aveanna nurse Della. Through the years, she has provided steady, hands-on clinical care, giving Kenny’s family reassurance and stability.

Now, Kenny is attending school, engaging in his learning environment, and communicating using his speaking device. He is no longer just overcoming challenges — he is discovering his voice and his independence in the world.

Kenny’s mom said, “When you are raising a medically complex child, you are placing your deepest fears and your greatest trust into the hands of others. This Feeding Tube Awareness Week, we’re celebrating the life-changing power of feeding tubes and individuals like Conner who use them!

As a toddler, Conner was in a car accident with his dad and older brother. Doctors said the accident was not survivable. But Conner did survive – thanks to his mom’s unfailing faith in him and support from his family, community, and medical teams.

Conner spent three months in the hospital after the accident. When he finally came home, he was quadriplegic and dependent on a G-tube, trach, and vent. “I knew how much of a miracle Conner truly is,” his mom recalls. “I chose hope for Conner. I chose a positive environment. This May will be 20 years after the accident. He’s had struggles since then, but he’s also had so much joy.”

In addition to in-home nursing care, Conner’s feeding tube and other medical equipment help make his joyful, adventurous life possible. Despite the obstacles he faces, he is thriving and smiling as he travels around the country and enjoys each day surrounded by loved ones. His Aveanna nursing and medical solutions teams are honored to be part of Conner’s incredible support system.

“This journey seemed unbearable in the beginning,” Conner’s mom shares. “I didn’t think we would survive. But we are stronger than we think we are. It’s not always easy, but every day is a gift. I can’t imagine my path without Conner.”

Aveanna patient Jamir is one of our tiniest heart warriors, and we’re honored to share his beautiful story during Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week.

Jamir was born with Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), a condition in which a fetal blood vessel remains open after birth, affecting blood flow between the heart and lungs. He also lives with Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), a small opening in the wall separating the heart’s lower chambers.

From the very beginning, Jamir has shown remarkable strength.
After undergoing surgery to repair his PDA, Jamir continued to shine. Along every step of his journey, Aveanna nurse Amber has been there providing expert care, gentle reassurance, and celebrating each milestone as it comes. Her devotion helps ensure Jamir stays safe and supported as he grows.

It’s a true privilege to walk alongside patients like Jamir and the caregivers who champion them every day. This Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week, we celebrate their incredible journeys that inspire us all.
