Extreme temperatures associated with heat waves can make everyone uncomfortable. When combined with conditions such as high humidity, sun exposure, stagnant air, and poor air quality, high temperatures can also become a health concern. The groups most at risk to heat include, but are not limited to: children, older adults, people experiencing homelessness, people with pre-existing conditions, people with disabilities, indoor and outdoor workers, emergency responders, incarcerated people, low-income communities, pregnant women, athletes, and more. Although UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn, both UVA and UVB rays contribute to skin cancer. All sunscreens help protect against sunburn. But only those that are broad spectrum and have an SPF of at least 15 have been shown to also reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging caused by the sun when used as directed with other sun protection measures. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, about three children die each week in hot cars.

Since 1998, more than 960 children have died from vehicular heatstroke - an average of 37 per year - and 53% of incidents involve a parent or caregiver forgetting the child was in the vehicle. Parents and caregivers can act immediately to end these preventable deaths. Learn what you can do: https://bit.ly/4bajc5H
