As the school year begins, Carle Richland Rehab Services has some tips to improve your child’s handwriting skills as they progress through the school year.

👉 Correct grip: Make sure your child is holding their pencil correctly. Based on a child’s age their pencil grip will vary and that’s ok! However, the ideal grip is a tripod grasp which should develop between ages 4-6.

👉 Correct Pressure: Make sure your child is not pressing too hard or too light on paper. Pressing too hard can cause increased hand fatigue when writing.

👉 Correct Posture: Make sure your child is not slouching while writing. It is a good rule to have your child’s feet flat on the floor, knees bent at 90 degrees and elbows level with the desk when bent. Poor posture can create additional strain on the body leading to fatigue.

As the world is becoming more advanced in the field of technology, the use of technology is growing in schools, and children are using tablets and computers to complete academic work. As a result, this can ultimately lead to delaying/impaired handwriting skills. One good way to adapt to this way of education is using a stylus.

Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants at Carle Richland Memorial Hospital can assist your child in improving skills needed for fine motor tasks such as handwriting. Talk with your provider if you feel like your child has increased difficulty with school performance due to poor handwriting or lacking fine motor skills.

Leslie Shan, mental health first aid instructor for Carle Richland, is gearing up for another fun year at area second grade classrooms with the Little Spot of Emotion program!

Leslie enjoys working with the kids and helping them to understand their emotions and why they may be feeling those emotions.

Thanks to RCES and the other area schools who partner with us to bring this program to the students. Wishing all kids a happy and successful school year!

Leslie Shan with Carle Richland Memorial Hospital stopped by Alexis Shawver's 2nd grade classroom to deliver new and exciting resources for the Little Spot of Emotion curriculum that RCES 2 Grades have implemented over the past couple years. We are so excited and very fortunate to utilize these resources with our students!

We are excited to be able to make these updates to better care for our littlest patients. Thank you to the Carrie Winter Trust for helping us to continue to provide great care locally!

Carle Richland Memorial Hospital recently accepted a grant from the Carrie Winter Trust to help transform imaging services for pediatric patients. The dollars will be used to ensure our youngest patients receive the best care possible. This includes a hand immobilizer to hold a small hand flat during the exam; an immobilizer designed to provide maximum comfort and stability for children 4 months to age 3; and a flap set to hold infants safely in place during MRI or X-ray scans.
