The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) was signed into law in 2014 to help people with disabilities gain the training, education, and support needed to find and keep meaningful jobs.

It encourages businesses to build inclusive workplaces and ensures that career programs are accessible to everyone, regardless of ability.

💼 Employment Rights for All!

In 1973, the Rehabilitation Act changed history for people with disabilities.
📜 Sections 501 & 503 made it illegal for federal employers and contractors to discriminate based on disability.

Meet Ed Roberts, often called the “Father of the Independent Living Movement.”
In the 1970s, Ed, who used a wheelchair due to polio, fought tirelessly for the rights of people with disabilities to live independently, access education, and work in their communities. His activism changed history and opened doors for generations to come.

Because of pioneers like Ed, individuals with disabilities today can learn, work, and thrive in ways that were once unimaginable. 💙

🤔 Did You Know?

The first known “special education” classroom in the US was established in the 19th century by Edouard Séguin, a French physician who developed teaching methods for children with intellectual disabilities. His principles influenced modern programs like PHIDD’s day habilitation and skill-building services!

🦋 Did You Know?

As of October 1, 2025, Maryland residents can add a butterfly symbol to their driver’s licenses or state IDs to indicate a hidden disability — like autism, intellectual disabilities, or mental health conditions.

This discreet symbol helps law enforcement and first responders recognize hidden disabilities and ensure safer, more supportive interactions.

The initiative, called “Eric’s ID Law”, honors Eric Carpenter-Grantham’s advocacy and promotes inclusion and understanding. 💙
