You still have time to donate blood or platelets in Hannah’s honor. Our goal is 30 people and we are currently at 3 so we have a ways to go. You do not have to be in Olympia to make the donation as there are many Bloodworks locations.
When Hannah was in the hospital, she received platelets as part of her treatment and we are grateful that the hospital/Bloodworks Northwest had the supply to give her. That is not the case right now.
Bloodworks Northwest, our local blood center, is in urgent need of platelet donations! Platelets are the clotting factor in our blood, and a low platelet count can be fatal. Many patients in our community need platelets, so the need for them is constant, especially since they only last for 5 days after donation. Bloodworks is encouraging you to consider donating platelets!
So how does platelet donation work?
If you give platelet donation a try, you will complete what we call an "apheresis" donation, which uses a special machine to separate platelets (but not nearly all of them) from the other components in your blood. The machine collects enough platelets for an entire donation to a patient, and then returns the rest of your blood to you. The process takes about 1-2 hours depending on your weight, and you can donate platelets once every 7 days, and 3 days after a whole blood donation. Please visit https://schedule.bloodworksnw.org. On the day of your donation, let the registrar know that you are donating on behalf of HSM Days of Service by providing this code: 𝗛𝗦𝗠. This is how Bloodworks NW will track your donation.
Who needs platelets? Why the urgency?
Low platelet counts could make even a minor bump on the wrist fatal, and cancer, trauma, transplant, and bleeding disorder patients often need platelets the most. And with a shelf life of just 5 days, our community needs a constant supply of platelet donations to make sure the patients who need them get all the help they need.
So what do you think? Give platelet donation a try before your next whole blood donation and know that you're filling a critical and urgent need for patients in our community!
