Breathe Better Myofunctional Therapy

Breathe Better Myofunctional Therapy Treating individuals with muscle dysfunction of the mouth & face caused by mouth breathing, tongue tie, &/or oral habits, like thumbsucking.

This can lead to problems with dental crowding, chewing, swallowing, speech, and sleep (snoring and apnea)

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) occur when there is abnormal development or use of the face, mouth and/or tongue muscles, resulting in:

📍 Dysfunctional tongue placement
📍 Breastfeeding problems
📍 Stunted facial skeletal growth and development
📍 Disordered chewing and swallowing
📍 Speech impediments
📍 Malocclusion
📍 Temporomandibular joint movement/disorders
📍 Poor oral hygiene
📍 Stability of orthodontic treatment
📍 Facial esthetics... and more

Chewing plays an important role within the treatment program as it can help guide the strength and development of muscles and maintain healthy, strong muscle tone at any age ✨

We have to recognize that tongue-tie is only the tip of the iceberg.

We need to be looking at

👅tongue posture
😄chewing
😋swallowing
🥤diet
🥦nutrition
😮mouth breathing
👍habits
👉genetic factors and more

The goal is to understand that tongue-tie is a piece of the puzzle and different elements need to be considered to help patients in each and every stage!

🗣 Myofunctional therapy is not a NEW concept!
Orofacial Myofunctional therapy has been discussed as early as the 1800s with Dr. Edward Angle 🦷
He recognized the influence of mouth breathing on the resting posture and how it affected orthodontic treatment.

Following him , Dr. Alfred Rogers developed exercises to improve muscle function and tone.

How does this help clear the nose ?!?!

➡️ temporarily increases carbon dioxide levels in the blood, which will in turn open the nasal passages. 👃

Breathing exercises can often help but they don’t always work for everyone.

If your nasal congestion is severe and doesn’t get better despite practicing different nasal clearing methods, including daily rinses and sprays, then you should talk to a doctor to find out if there’s an underlying issue that needs to be treated.

As a result compensation patterns during sleep may develop including open mouth breathing, teeth clenching, or predominant side-sleeping that can have secondary effects on maxillofacial development, temporomandibular health, and musculoskeletal posture issues.

Similarly, compensation patterns such as forward head posture, anteriorly rolled shoulders, and other myofascial restrictions may also be adopted to offset the limitations of a restricted upper airway in affected patients even while they are standing upright and awake. ZaghiMD.com
