People Behind The Magic:
Christine McClendon is a case manager for Step By Step. She works first-hand with clients, through home and hospital visits, providing guidance, support and teaching classes about birthing and infant care.

“When I first heard about SBS, 11 years ago, I could have never imagined what the enterprise would become! I was brought on as a home visitor as they were needing an additional case manager. I naively took on the role, not knowing exactly how I would merge my skillset in a home visiting setting. My background is in nutrition, infant feeding, lactation and public health, and it quickly became a great fit to join this amazing team!

I really love the continuity of care between pregnancy, newborn care and infancy. I never would have imagined how much I would learn from my clients and coworkers. It has been an immensely rich experience to get to meet clients from various backgrounds, cultures and life experiences.

It has been such an honor to help families navigate this profoundly sacred time of their lives. I love that when we are committed to supporting families, there’s rarely a “no”. When I’ve needed to help meet an odd need for a family, we have often found a way to make it happen, either through donations, connections or just the generosity and time of our volunteers. I also absolutely love that there’s always been a larger vision for the wellbeing of our families. We’ve never “just” been a home visiting program because our director has been able to see the bigger picture of the systemic needs of our clients.

Shout out to the amazing support staff, volunteers and donors that make this work possible. It is humbling to be in the company of so many that collectively prioritize families and children in the community. We couldn’t do this without you!”

Christine has a deep passion for infant care. As a consultant, she has supported countless families by thoughtfully discovering what works best for both mothers and their babies with an open mind and compassionate approach. Christine often meets mothers in the hospital shortly after birth, helping them feel comfortable through her humor and positive attitude toward childbirth. She is a strong advocate for women in the early stages of pregnancy and motherhood, with the goal of providing equal opportunity and support for all women as they care for themselves and their newborns. We are incredibly grateful for Christine’s passion, dedication, and heart for teaching and serving. Thank you to Christine and all of our gracious case managers!
