As a pregnancy dietitian, this it what I tell my clients:

1. The “do not eat” list does not need to be your main concern. Your main concern should be what can I ADD to my diet to better support baby’s growth. Focus on enhancing your diet instead of taking away from it.

2. Your pregnancy symptoms DO NOT have to be barrier between you and the way you want to nourish your baby. You have control to take the action steps today to reduce your symptoms and take control over your food choices.

3. How you ate before pregnancy most likely isn’t going to meet baby’s needs for optimal growth. Your nutrient needs have increased dramatically. Mindlessly eating a little bit more during pregnancy without choosing nutrient dense foods may lead to increased risks for baby’s development. Learn what your specific needs are and what can be added into your diet!

Nutrition is so important during pregnancy. Your child’s health now and for their rest of their life is in your hands. Do you want to be the empowered mom-to-be and learn how to optimally provide for your little one?

Cravings aren’t a bad thing. Sometimes, there’s context to why you’re experiencing a certain craving.

Let me explain:

Your nutrient needs increase dramatically during pregnancy and your body knows it. If you aren’t fulfilling its needs, it’s going to let you know!

This is a way your body is looking out for you, so it’s best to listen. Honor your cravings, get curious, and determine the root of the issue.

Ignoring what your body is telling you could lead to unwanted complications or outcomes during pregnancy.

You do not have to struggle during pregnancy. 🫶

Yes, there is a lot going on in your body to grow an entire new human, but there’s even more we can do to make sure your body is properly equipped to do so.

Nutrient deficiencies, imbalanced meals, and inactiveness are three of the biggest reasons I see women struggling throughout their pregnancy.

Pregnancy isn’t a time to wait around and hope for the best. You baby-to-be needs you!

You deserve to feel good during pregnancy and to feel confident you’re doing everything you can for a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby.

I challenge you to be proactive in your pregnancy journey. Not only will it affect these next coming months, but it will have lasting affects on your baby 🤍

Iron is an essential nutrient during pregnancy. Your needs go up by 1.5x!

Iron is important for baby’s brain and cognitive development, thyroid function, and a low iron status during pregnancy is a risk factor for preeclampsia and preterm birth.

3 factors that may put you at risk for iron deficiency in pregnancy 👇🏻

-Religiously taking antacids like Tums. Antacids reduce the amount of acid in your stomach. Stomach acid is needed to help absorb minerals like iron; a reduction could impact the amount of iron getting into the blood.

-Animal-sourced iron is best absorbed. If you are vegetarian or have a low consumption of meat and seafood, you may not be consuming enough iron to meet baby’s optimal needs.

-If your prenatal vitamin contains both iron and calcium as they compete for absorption. This is another factor that could be limiting the amount of iron you are absorbing.

It is extremely common to crave carbohydrates, especially during the first trimester! Hang in there, mama 🫶

There are two things I really want you to know about this.

1. Honor those cravings because ignoring them could lead to unwanted outcomes down the road

2. Be mindful and aim to choose unprocessed carbohydrates more often than highly refined and processed carbs

Honoring your cravings is something I always encourage with my clients.

It’s important to be curious and listen to your body.

But it’s equally as important to do this mindfully. If you consistently turn to low-nutrient-dense foods and highly refined foods, you may be doing more harm than good.

Nutrition is never all-or-nothing. A balance is what we’re aiming for!

👉🏻👉🏻Research has shown that a nutrient-dense diet does result in fewer cravings so it is definitely something to address if your cravings seem to never end.

With a few new faces around here, I thought I’d say hello!

My name is Kaslyn, I’m a Registered Dietitian with a specialty in nutrition during pregnancy.

✨A few quick facts

-I’m getting married next year in Mexico!
-I’m from Nebraska but currently living in Sydney, Australia (my fiancé is an Aussie if you’re curious why ☺️)
-I live for a good sunrise/sunset
-I love to cook at least one new recipe every week; feel free to send me your favorites!
-I became an aunt this year to the cutest nephew, Luca 🤗

✨What my page is for:

-I discovered while getting my masters that nutritional information for pregnant women is extremely lacking. I was assisting with a research study on the affect of DHA to reduce preterm birth (it was a success btw!!). -Once my friends began to start their families, it was even more evident they weren’t getting much information at their prenatal appointments.
-I became passionate not only about educating women on the lasting affects nutrition has on your child, but also that women don’t have to suffer through the pregnancy unknowns.
-I aim to spread the word that you don’t have to just deal with debilitating side effects and it’s possible to feel good during every trimester.
-That way you can gain control over the foods you eat and learn how to nourish yourself for a healthy pregnancy and baby. 🫶
