After years of connecting virtually, meeting our clients face-to-face for the first time feels especially meaningful and exciting.

Dr. Dipika Aggarwal recently made a triumphant return to QLI’s campus and inspired us with the lessons she's gained from her remarkable recovery.

Since her inpatient stay QLI in 2020 followed by her participation in outpatient therapy with Kintinu Telerehab, Dipika has continued to battle and thrive. She has returned to work as a neurologist, and her profound perspective provided a wealth of wisdom.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a transformative approach to therapy that encourages embracing emotions and values-driven actions. It's crucial because it empowers individuals to accept life's challenges, commit to meaningful changes, and live in alignment with their core values. ACT helps us navigate difficult emotions and situations with resilience and mindfulness. It fosters self-awareness, personal growth, and emotional well-being, making it a powerful tool for enhancing mental health and overall life satisfaction.

In the aftermath of a traumatic brain injury (TBI), individuals face a multitude of cognitive challenges. Here are some key aspects to consider:

💡 Cognitive Status: Every waking moment revolves around using cognition to understand and react to our environment, from processing information to making decisions and taking action.

🔒 Vulnerability: Impaired decision-making and lack of awareness can make individuals with a TBI more susceptible to scams and online threats.

😬 Impulse Control: TBI can lead to impulse control issues, resulting in interruptions, rude remarks, risky behaviors, or emotional outbursts.

💬 Communication Difficulties: Communication skills may be disrupted, making it challenging to find the right words, speak coherently, or engage in meaningful conversations.

🧠 Frontal Lobe Impact: Cognitive deficits in TBIs often stem from frontal lobe damage, affecting executive functioning, decision-making, and overall cognition.

Rehabilitation programs play a crucial role in improving cognitive deficits and helping individuals regain their independence and quality of life. Remember, understanding and support are essential for individuals navigating life after a TBI.

ACT is all about aligning with our clients' values, and Kelsey has found a fantastic way to do just that. Values are the compass guiding our journey towards well-being. Sometimes, identifying them explicitly can be transformative.

Kelsey uses Dare to Lead List of Values, a resource by Brene Brown during therapy sessions.

"With the list, I have them choose 5 values that resonate with them. From there, we discuss what they currently are doing in their everyday life to uphold their values and what they want to be doing/what they aren't because they feel like the pain is getting in the way."

With this insight, we can begin small, achievable tasks that help clients reconnect with their values and take control of their lives. It's a journey of empowerment and self-discovery that leads to pain management on their terms!

Check out these tips for creating & sticking to your resolutions!!

1. Choose the Right Resolutions:
Select goals that align with your true aspirations and skills, avoiding ones that may lead to feelings of failure. Consider the long-term impact and value of achieving each goal. Ensure your goals are realistic within your daily routines.

2. Set the Right Number of Resolutions and Prioritize:
Determine the number of resolutions that fit your capacity and create a plan for each one. Prioritize your goals based on importance, and organize them accordingly.

3. Make Specific Plans for Each Goal:
Break down your resolutions into small, feasible steps. Dedicate time to each step and establish necessary parameters or boundaries. Develop detailed plans for achieving your goals, addressing the specifics of each.

4. Write Down Resolutions and Plans:
Document your resolutions and plans in easily accessible places. Use your phone's Notes app, a planner, or visible spaces to reinforce your commitment to your goals.

5. Revisit Resolutions Regularly:
Regularly check in on your resolutions based on your preferred frequency. Set reminders to ensure consistent reflection on your goals.

6. Track Your Progress:
Regularly track and visualize your progress using tools like spreadsheets, notebooks, or goal-specific apps. Ensure your chosen tracking method is quick and easy to access.

7. Share Your Resolutions:
Inform others about your goals to create accountability. Consider having an accountability partner to significantly improve your success rates.

8. Forgive Yourself and Restart:
Understand that getting off track is normal and doesn't define your success. Learn from setbacks, reassess goals if needed, and realign with your priorities.

9. Utilize Support:
If working with clinicians or mentors, seek their assistance in developing and achieving your resolutions. Leverage external support to stay motivated and on track.

Remember, resolutions are dynamic, and adapting them to align with changing priorities enhances your chances of success. Stay committed, be flexible, and celebrate your progress along the way!

Did you know that New Year's Resolutions date back to ancient Babylon, with roots as deep as 4,000 years ago? By the 19th century, they became a common practice, yet humorously, a 1802 article satirized the widespread trend. Even then, it was clear that many resolutions ended up broken. So, why do we continue this tradition, and how can we increase our success rates?

Stay tuned for tips in creating & sticking to your new years resolutions!
